It's very rare that I shoot male models, but yesterday I had a session with a local model and actor... Luc Bernier, o*m*p 140462.

And I was very pleasantly surprised at how well it went. Unlike a lot of other models I've worked with, not only was he on time but even early. And he was organized and ready. Willing to help carry gear as we tried some on-location shots. And my "keeper" rate was a heck of a lot higher with his shots than with any other model I've shot before. And best of all, there was virtually no "glamour" editing required afterwards.

1. Studio shot - 50mm f1.4 - two 60" Photoflex bounce umbrellas (one each side and slightly behind the model) with Hensel Integra Pro Plus heads.

2. Studio shot - 85mm f1.2L - Hensel Beauty Dish as main, 20 degree grid w/barndoors and blue gel aimed onto backdrop and a sheet of black foamcore board to absorb some light on the model's left side.

3. Studio shot - 35mm f1.4L - two bounce umbrellas on backdrop with sheets of black foamcore board to prevent contaminating the subject and small softbox as main. All Integra Pro Plus heads.

4. Available light on-location shot - 85mm f1.2L - 1/30th @ f2 - This was a very dark corner of an abandoned apartment and the blue color was the actual wall color. 42" silver reflector to try to get some light back onto the front of the model. Tripod. Behind the model that is not an outside window (hence the low light) but rather a window that faces a large enclosed room that used to be a balcony.

5. Outdoor available light shot - 85m f1.2L - 1/400th @f2 - no reflector.

Anyway, based on this great experience, I'm certainly going to be more open to shooting males in the future.

Hope you like the shots.

I like the photography. In particular, I like the second image as an excellent portrait. That said, I find his expressions too similar throughout. It looks like a good session, though.

Nice stuff. Thanks for sharing.
