Since I'm a new guy to photographing people, should I try and find an experienced model to help me through being a novice. Should I go find someone that's a model/photographer. Should I find a photographer and ask if I can tag along?
I hate physical therapy.

Yes.

And there are other possibilities. But it depends on you. If you're an experienced photographer, comfortable with exposure, lighting control, and all those issues - go to an advanced workshop to get time with models. If you're past the "which button takes the picture?" stage, but hardly experienced, you might want to collar friends and gain some experience controlling your results - set the camera on manual and make mistakes. Go to the public library and READ the photography how-to books. Ditto on-line.

If you've got the dough and the drive, hire experienced models and have at it. But don't expect the model to teach you how to set your lights, or compose the image, or what the exposure should be, .... But if you're at the right stage, I would suspect that you can gain a lot of very valuable experience this way. But don't expect to get an experienced model to work free - it's a trade of value for value and if you're new, you probably can't offer much of real value to an experienced model except the folding green kind.

Workshops can be valuable, maybe even invaluable, to you. But you should talk with the instructors before deciding and, if possible, some past participants, to ensure that you select a workshop at the appropriate level and with good instruction. Forums like this can be useful in getting specific advice about workshops.

Good luck, and welcome.

I love it when people write back. I do have some extra money lying around, but I think I'll use it to get some of my friends to be in front of the camera. I know where the button to take the picture is. It's a good thing cameras are ergonomically designed. Phew! That's it. I'm going to get out there this weekend and hope it doesn't rain like it has for the past 2 weeks.

Truly, thanks.

Tag Along?? You dont need to learn Tag Along to shoot models.

(oh and if anyone dosen't get the joke.. Tag Along is a language.)

Mr. Ford has some valuable advice there.. as he always does.. But I am very interested in his view that the "button takes the picture".. does that mean that I have to go buy more buttons??? Damn.. nobody told me that.. I guess I have to go to the fabric store to get me more buttons to take more pictures for me..
