The very beautiful and talented hailey came by my studio last evening to be my test subject as I setup about 8 different lighting configurations for headshots so I could find the one that I like best.

This particular image was shot with an Alien Bee octodome suspended above Hailey and a 48" photoflext reflector on a stand below her for clam shell style lighting. Let me know what you think. Also, if you have some other ideas on good headshot lighting I would love to hear them. I tried this method, replacing the reflector with a large photoflex soft box, an AB beauty dish replacing the octodome with the photoflex large soft box, shooting through panels with the panels between Hailey and me, shooting with the panels behind me, bouncing from the panels, using a medium photoflex soft box as a main and a large as a fill, using the large soft box as the main and a homemade panel as the fill.

i don't think one, all-purpose, lighting setup is going to work for all subjects. modifying your setups to to adapt to different "looks" and/or purposes or use of the resulting headshot is something, i believe, all photographers (who shoot headshots) need to consider.

in your sample headshot, i'm not too keen on the dual set of catchlights in each eye altho your clamshell lighting works for many headshot applications.

Thanks for the input JimmyD. I know that you used to shoot a lot of headshots. How would you go about lighting an image like this one? This is a learning exercise for me. That is why I went through all of these different setups to see what the quality of the light would be like from each of the combinations of modifiers.

I can agree but to me this subject is pretty close to symetrical lending itself to the over and under technique in my ways. But I am having a real hard time understanding the true catchlight pattern as if one of the eyeball was flipped. The pattern of catchlights are not equal to both eyes which might be giving you a problem more than the technique for this subject?

Hello JT,

Thanks for posting. Can you give me an idea of what you would do to fix that in the lighting?

Honestly I don't know. The pattern of the catch lights should be uniformed in both eyes and they spray off in different angles and uniformity. I am wondering if she is wearing contacts?

Here is what the eyes look like up close:

<CENTER></CENTER>

Here is what the setup was:

<CENTER></CENTER>

Hailey is standing partially under the octodome, which is how the couple of sample setups I have seen showed it. As you can see, the catchlights in the eyes are semi-circles (okay, semi-octagons) and each catchlight is affected by being blocked by her head so they appear to be somewhat mirror images unlike what you receive when the entire light source is out in front or to one side. It was my understanding that you have the subject stand partially under the octodome to help illuminate the hair. At this point it looks like following this lighting pattern will require edits to the catch lights on the images. I guess I will have to try having her stand back so that all of the light is in front of her and add a hairlight to illuminate the hair and see how that works. Of course, I imagine it will be a while before I can talk Hailey into sitting through a bunch of headshots again

Thanks for all of the input.
