I have a session with a model next week, and she needs to do some in a swim suit. Because of her work schudle I will need to do the appointment in my studio. Can any one give me their thought on what would be a good background for an instudio session?

I know this background is to busy, but this is the type of session I will be doing.

Thanks george

Hi,
I shoot 400-500 swimwear catalog images on a semi-monthly basis, and most of the time my clients want a very simple (usually white in tone) backdrop.
This particular shoot we did this past Friday, we used white wedding toule as the backdrop. They wanted a soft, white backdrop.

George,

I'm not convinced it's the wrong background. In fact it appears to be very versatile. I think your problems are:

1. Your shooting with a lens range that is too close to normal. Back the subject and yourself away from the background another 5'+ and then use a telephoto lens which covers less angle of view of the backgound.

2. Open the lens aperture up to near wide open. Reduce the strobe power down to low output if necessary. This will blow out any "in focus" potential of the background and it will cause those wonderful tones to blend.

I think your only limit with that background will be what color fashions your models can wear. I would estimate they mostly should be solid colors that echo tones in the background.

Swimwear in front of a black or dark background with some kicker lights can look really good depending on what she needs the swimwear shots for.

FWIW, don't make the mistake that most non-pros make, that's not giving the model sufficient time to lose the marks made by her clothes. Let her sit somewhere wearing a loose robe until these marks go away. They can spoil a nice shot, or add post processing time. BTW, watch where and how she sits as well, as this may add additional marks.

Hello George,

Here is one more idea. Use an "emergency space blanket" for a backdrop. One will suffice for 3/4 length shots. You will need two or three to do full length.

There are two types of these blankets. The cheapest one appears to be nothing but a specialized type of mylar. These I have founds to be poor for background use because they just have too many folds and creases. The more expensive version has a silver side and an emergency orange side that is some type of synthetic fabric or something. This is the one I use for backgrounds. Here is a link to one on-line that I found. http://www.armynavysales.com/Merchan...egory_Code=BED I have found them locally at a ****'s Sporting Goods and Sports Authority, but neither of them lists it on their web sites.

I don't have any swimwear samples, but this lingerie is pretty close. You can get a tighter look out of it if you really clamp the edges and pull it tight.

I think alot has to do with what the images will be used for. For on line catalog shots a bright white background seems to be the most popular. But I am dieing to try a black background sometime.

Did someone say black with a kicker?

I also like to use Storm Gray unlit. Makes a wonderful charcoal color.
