i notice that, when i read comments and critiques of images posted by novice photographers, those that critique often use terms the novice photographers are (or seem) unacquainted with.

as an example, there's a thread in the "photo critique" forum right now where an experienced photographer recommended to a less experienced photographer that he use a "kicker" light to improve the images. the less experienced shootercommented that he's not acquainted with the term "kicker" and asked for an explanation.

rather than have to explain a "kicker" to this individual, i think it would be a great idea if there were a glossary of terms somewhere on the site, perhaps one that could be continually updated and inputted by members.

here's just a few terms that come immediately to mind that a noticeable amount of members (free members or otherwise) seem unclear with:

kicker
rimlight
edgelight
scrim
flag
beadboard
foamcore
dragging the shutter
gobo
rembrandt patch
chiaroscuro

That is a good idea. Like a frequently asked questions page or something.
I know all the ones you listed but the last. Is that a special burrito or something?

Yes. The Chiaroscuro Burrito is a common and much-loved entree served on many craft services tables.

a burrito is a mexican dish named, for some reason, after a small burro. (a hooved animal similar to a donkey.)

the first image (below) is a "combo burrito," i.e., cheese, beans, chopped onion, cooked ground beef, and salsa (which is like mexican tomato and chili pepper chutney), wrapped in a flour tortilla. (which is mexico's variation on unleaven bread.) the second image (below) is a small burro, or burrito.

D'uh! And btw, foamcore ain't simply a guerilla-photographer's/guerilla-filmmaker's, stationary store-bought, poor man's reflector. it's used extensively on mainstream motion picture sets and by many top photographers. also, btw, places like "office max" ain't the best place to buy foamcore. lighting, grip, electric, and expendables suppliers from mole-richardson to samy's carries it AND they carry it in 4' x 8' sheets, in white, black, and white one-side and black the other side.

Huh, who knew?!?

Speaking of, how much do they sell a 4x8 sheet for? I had to get one in a pinch, and ended up at a local craft store that had one, and it cost me 40 bucks.
