Up here in Canada there has been a recent incident involving a photographer who is apparently registered at some other place (who knows about here as well) who has allegedly taken inappropriate photos of a "sexual nature" of teens looking for modeling portfolio work who contacted him through that site.

I have a few comments and would like to see what others think as well...

First, here is a link to one of the stories on the incident:

http://www.torontosun.com/News/Toron...63846-sun.html

This is why it is so difficult sometimes I think for photographers who are starting out - because guys like this give photographers a bad name. Now, I haven't seen the pictures and I don't know what "of a sexual nature" refers to in this particular case - but I do know that anyone who photographs under 18's in any sort of glamour style is PUSHING THEIR LUCK.

There is NO WAY I would ever EVER photograph someone under 18 in anything CLOSE to implied or lingerie etc... but unfortunately, there are a number of "GWC"s out there who are using the internet and the "photography" guise to do this sort of "work" and then ply models with alcohol and then engage in other inappropriate behaviour.

Now here is where my rant really comes in... The laws in this country don't make any sense. For those of you who are unaware - 14 is the legal age of consent here. You read this right - 14 is the LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT!!! So what the media isn't saying is that, this guy, if given consent by girls from 14 - 18 could have had sex with them, but just don't take pictures because then it's child pornography.

Am I taking crazy pills or does this make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER?????

And if you are a lurker who is engaged in any of this type of behaviour: do everyone a favour and sell your camera gear now before you hurt someone and get yourself into trouble. Go get some damn counselling and get better...

Sorry... I'm just so sick of reading stuff like this...

Yeah, that sort of stuff really urks me. For curiosity sake, I check really quickly on the web-site that was mentioned in the article. There is no sort of warning or tips for models in the questions / faq section. The only thing that was mention was the disclaimer stating the site is for 13yrs and older. Yes I agree that there are GWC’s out there that will try stuff like this, and I hope they all get caught. But I really think that anybody thinking of modeling should be informed about this sort of thing that they may run into. Sites that provide modeling services such as this should have some sort of information on the do’s and don’ts. Does anybody have a suggested web-site for models which lists this type of information?

I won't shoot anyone under the age of 18 unless one of the parents is present and even then will only do clearly age-appropriate shoots.

I even hesitate to work with someone under 20 years of age.
A few days ago I was contacted by a young model in my area (through ********) who wanted to work with me. (Lingerie shots were specificially mentioned.) I checked out her portfolio and it said she was 16 years old! Yet she already had some shots which I felt weren't age appropriate.

I replied that I wouldn't do lingerie of her and that the only way I'd work with her or anyone else under 18 would be with a parent present.

About 10 days later, I got another email from the same model, clearly one that had been cut and pasted to several photographers in the area (perhaps forgetting that she'd JUST contacted me). I looked at her port again and this time it said her age was 18!!!!!

Something smells very fishy with this.

There's NO WAY I'd work with her until she was well over 20! I wouldn't be surprised if she'd gotten hold of some fake ID as well.

We've all just got to be VERY careful anytime and these days especially.

Cheers!

Eldor

(The other site was censored out, but it was the MC one if that makes sense to anyone.)

Since I have started modeling, the whole GWC thing really scares me. I have not worked with many photographers, and have been fortunate enough not to have had a bad experience.
However, because of the stories and articles I've read, I am always nervous to work with someone new - because of this, I feel that I am holding myself back from gaining more experience and exposure.
I realize there are certain precautions one can take - like, getting references (from both models & other photogs.) - checking his/her portfolio - what type of work they are into - what jobs they have done or been published in if at all....
Yet, even if the person has a professional website, noted works, etc... it's still in the back of my mind that all of that could be entirely made up - and this person could potentially be scary.
I understand that I'm more times than not, just psyching myself out - but I wish there were some way of really knowing the person you may be about to work with.

Thoughts on this?

Ask for references.....

If anyone is just starting out and does not have references then one should ask if they can bring an escort. If there are issues with this then no need to work at all regardless of income. Safety first and understand who you are working with.

If anyone fails to comply with references, red flag, unless above.

If anyone provides references, please follow through and check up on those references, but then also understand who is being referenced.

Forums are a great source to ask if anyone has heard of such and such a photographer. I would imagine in both private and public you will receive information.

If it's too good to be true, then chances are it is.

Communicate and ask for business address, numbers, client list, etc.

If anyone promises you they will make you a star....ask them who they made a star?

A minor should not go to anyone's assignment alone.

Anytime a minor is around, parents or an adult guardian will be present. Not should be, will be.

The media frenzy on stories like this make it sound as if this industry is nothing but bad and we are all pigs.....keep in mind.....priests, doctors, lawyers, etc, have been busted for the same thing. Casterate them all !!!!

__________

Hijacking the thread now......

Photographers should also be careful as well. You can hear just as much false accusations as you will hear photographers harming others but that never gets reported on.

"Thoughts on this?"

First of all, trust your gutt... if something feels wrong, don't go there.

Second, not every photographer wants or even allows the model to bring an escort to the shoot (they often get in the way and/or distract the model's attention) and in most cases with a pro photographer there will be other people around at shoot anyway, such as makeup artist, assistant, art director and maybe even the client. Probably pretty safe for the model.

As a photographer, I always insist on a face-to-face meeting with a potential model in a safe place. I do try to get her to come to my office during business hours (26 other people around) so she could see my studio, etc. but I'm not against meeting in a coffeeshop or whatever if the model feels better about that.

A prior (to the shoot) meeting doesn't guarantee safety during the shoot, but it sure goes a long way towards that gutt feeling I mentioned - if you get bad vibes then you shouldn't go ahead with a shoot.

If you're going to be somewhere without others around, make sure your parents/friends/whatever know where you will be and when you're expected back. And how to contact you there if need be.

Bottom line is that there's no magic answer that I've ever heard. Sure there are some bad apples out there, but that's certainly not limited to photographers/models... it could be teachers/students, or doctors/patients or heck even employers/employees. Best to always keep your wits about you.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi JT,

Can I repost this on my blog for other models?

I may be wrong, but going back to one of the original points, it was said that 14 is the age of consent so a photographer could legally have sex with a girl at that age. It is my understanding that even though the age of consent is 14, there is a maximum age in which her partener can be to legally have sex. I want to say it is either 2 or 4 year age difference until one turns 17, then you can have sex with anyone over that age. Am I incorrect in my understanding??

Yes... Unfortunately you are incorrect. There is no age gap except for under 14. At 14 you can legally consent, the only difference being if it's with a person who is in a position of authority or in which the person is in a position of dependence and in that case the consenter has to be 18. :S
