Disturbing situation at my son's school earlier in the evening. The story and images from me were picked up by WGEM channel 10 and the Quincy Herald Whig. Not being proud about this as some new buses, and our bus barn(maintainence building like) went down in flames tonight.

An explosion happened. Our volunteer fire department was able to contain, surround and drown. as neighboring houses were in danger, with strong winds and embers carrying over on roof tops of residential properties less than 200 feet away.

No injuries so I am happy about that.

I use to always be ready but I was just thinking the other day how relaxed I have been by leaving the camera at home, batteries not charged, and no formatted CF cards ready to go on moments notice. Ironically earlier today I told myself that I would have at least one camera, fully charged batteries and CF card ready to go because I was just thinking, you never know. I did just that and you really don't know.

From the sound of explosions and the fire siren, which calls from the water tower right next door to me from the moment 911 dispatches, 10 seconds later the first fire truck rolled passed my house I followed out the door.

Here is a link to WGEM channel ten with the story...click on "more" to read more and view larger picture. Like everything else, I am like why did they use that one?

http://www.wgem.com

I am certainly not trying to make this a big deal. It's trivial as far as my profession and photography goes but I did get paid. Just a story I wanted to share.

A friend of mine in journalism always said, "don't bother trying to figure out an editor, because it's damn near impossible and if you finally do they'll replace them anyway." They're all great shots, but #3 is fnatastic and has the requisite "heartbeat". I'm surprised that they passed that one up myself...

Similar story where I missed out (camera at home, batteries charging). A black bear made it's way down a riverway over the course of a week and was finally located in the suburbs of Milwaukee. Not rural suburbs...we're talking inner metro suburbs. Someone called police when it was found sleeping under a semi trailer at a distribution center right next to the automotive dealership that I was visiting that morning. As I stood and watched the chase from the trailer and up a tree, all I could think was "Son of a ______!!!"

A photographer from the local rag finally showed up 20 minutes into the event to capture images of the tranquilized bear falling safely into a net and being transported north, but I missed out on a front page image in a major metro paper. Lesson learned the hard way...but I haven't forgotten it.

They are all great, my favorite is #3. I love the dark orange in the fire, the reflectors on the fireman, the low perspective. Truly outstanding work and I wouldn’t expect any anything less form you. I'm curious what your exposure was, not that I'll ever photograph a fire at night.

Ya know, JT, you always say, it isn't the amount of light, it is the quality of the light that matters. Once again, you have proven that.

Bad situation - great pix!

I saw a "traffic jam" the other day that has convinced me to carry a PAS in my car from now on. Three male mallards following a big white duck around in circles in the middle of the road - cars 5-6 deep in either direction while they played tag.

Great shots, JT...certainly a cut FAR above the average newspaper pix. As for the pic they chose, the "PFD" on the firefighter's coat might have been a factor. Editors love identifiers like that...gives it that local feel.

I like #1 best. But who ever knows what an editor will pick and why? It was nice that they gave you credit. I've often seen photos of these kinds of events with no photo credit. Congratulations on some great shots!
Cheers,
rfs
