Full set of images I shot here are at http://www.pbase.com/kevgre/easternstate
Every time I come here I say to myself.. "How amazing would art-nudes be shot in this aging penitentiary." The timelines to be allowed to shoot here include Nov - March 31 (cold times for naked models).. But perhaps next year, I will coordinate a March shoot and pray for a warm day..
Here's a few from the famous Pentitentiary located in Philadelphia
Looking down a long cellblock

The chapel (shot through a dirty window)

A barber chair (taken from the barbershop because the roof is leaking)

Awesome site - is it still run by the State? I was just thinking in terms of permissions and the likelihood of getting permission to bring in propane heaters for a cold-season shoot.

I believe it is privately funded now and not run by the state.
Much more information about Eastern state can be viewed at http://www.easternstate.org

Awsome spot, just curious why you can't photograph in the summer?

Hey Kevgre,

I believe that shooting here again would be considered "Cruel & Unusual" punishment...unless I can come with you and shoot as well. What a great location.

I thought the second set was great, but these are even better. The light hitting the barber chair in #3...you couldn't set it up any better if you had to. Was that really natural? Great eye for the shot!

You can shoot anytime in the summer (up to 5) but you can't take models in during the open season. Only from Nov - Mar 31.. But as a photographer, you can go in from 10-5 7 days a week (9.00 admission) to shoot all day.

The barber chair is my favorite too.. The light is natural light coming in from the celing glass. There is a chain across the door.. I couldn't get in to arrange things if I wanted to.

Note to anyone shooting there.. Shoot F8-F11 and average 2 stops under. Shoot RAW.. in the brighter areas, I found up to 4 stops under worked best, and in some of the real dark cells, 1 stop under worked, but never did a regular exposure (I was shooting Aperture priority) look great. It looked like a well lit snapshot and the rotting theme of this penitentiary screams for moody, contrasty and saturated textures and color.

Oh, sorry .. overcast days provide the best light.. Always use a tripod because your exposure times are going to be slooooooow..

Sunny days create a much harsher shadowing, but it's better to shoot in the open areas in sunlight (exercise yard, towers etc).

There was a show on t.v last year about that very building being haunted. They say they caught a ghost on camera moving away down a cell block. It looked like a black cape in the dark. It was very scary for the crew that was shooting in there. They did the shooting after midnight and used night vision to shoot. Should be a fun place to shoot nudes.
