I had an image in my head and managed to get it into my camera. One Alien Bee 800 with a 20 degree grid up high directly in front of the model. Shot at F-11. Healing brush and a slight curve adjustment in PS.

The model is Amanda - MM #117823

About calling this fashion. I was listening to an interview with a NY fashion photographer and he made an interesting point I'd never thought of before. He said there are two kinds of fashion photography - advertising and catalog.

When you are shooting catalog the clothes have to look perfect. If you have two images and one is photographically better but has the belt in the wrong place, and another had the belt in the right place, but is a little wrong, you'll use the second everytime.

When you are shooting advertising fashion you take the image that invokes the feeling. Strangly enough the clothes are only of minor importance. If you think about it it kinds of makes sense. Beer ads are the same way. You can't see people using the product, so you just have to invoke a feeling.

This image is the advertising version of fashion. Matter of fact I'd preferred to have shot a dress, but she had lingerie, so we used that. But you can't even tell it is two pieces.

Nice shoot. Very mood-y.

Advertising seems to be selling more feelings than product these days. It almost doesn't matter what you are selling as long as it makes people feel good.

I don't know from fashion, but it's one d****d nice image - I really like the coordination of the colors of the leather and her skin and hair - in fact, the only criticism I'd make is that the pink of her top doesn't coordinate with the gold/brown theme - although it is echoed in her nails.

Nice job. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. We shot what she had. The big reason for this outfit was the shoes. They were the only ones I felt were elegant.

Very nice. I like how the shoes catch enough light to glow, but not so much that they distract. Very subtle... very nice. And thanks for the story about the view on fashion work. That makes total sense. Some people just seem to understand people so well.

Thanks again,
-David

The source of my new found understanding was the Studiolighting.net Lightsource podcast. Specifically this episode:

I found the website a little iffy, but the podcast is great.
