Holy cow! If you want to see some truly inspiring lighting and photography and makeup and and styling and costuming and all-around art direction, get your hands on "Memoirs of a Geisha." Oh yeah, the story and acting ain't bad either... for a chick flick.

cool shot, jim. now i'm stoked to shoot some asian-themed images, probly with a geisha flavor... which is sort of like madarin orange but with a cherry blossom twist.

anyeay, i'm gonna have to go and get some wardrobe and props unless i can find a model who has some of that stuff. but i'll still probly want to get some props and/or set pieces.

The movie was very good. Just watched last weekend. However the book was even better. I am also looking for the right model and props for that type of shoot.

I love Geishas...
A real one in person is unbelievable, I purchased the services of a Mikosan in Kyoto in 1985 (her and three Geishas), she entertained us, fed me and my dinner guests, danced, played games... but most of all, she was amazingly beautiful.
In the meantime, here's a more modern Geisha.

Jimmy, thanks for reminding me, I have been meaning to see this production ever since it was released. I just have to put aside some time and enjoy the exotic Orient on screen because I'm a long way from being there. As far as shooting Geisha theme, I rented the kimono, wig and sandals from a theatrical costume house. Pictured here is Nana of Indianapolis, you can see more of her on my site on Midwest page.

Haven't seen the movie but I read this article about shooting it. They built the whole village in California and then covered it in silk (2.5 acres) to get the light right. Incrediable.
