Was sitting here thinking about when I first started toying with Glamour photography. This was in the early '70s. The definitive photographer at that time, to me, was Peter Gowland. I went out and bought all of his books, and drooled over his studio and equipment. What was really fascinating, was the things he built himself to get the shots he wanted. So, I did a search for his name, and came up with www.petergowland.com. For many of you just starting out with tons of questions, this is a good site to visit. A lot of pointers on posing. some of the backdrops and posing tools he built himself, even the multitude of the rich and famous that he hung with and shot.
I had forgotten about the mirrored box that he used to shoot underwater photos with. I actually built and used one myself. It was, for me, quite a trip down memory lane. For many of you, it could be quite the thing to get your creative juices flowing.

Yes, I definitely remember Peter Gowland. I even remember seeing a video of his, "Gowland's Guide to Glamour" I believe was the title.

He definitely did some incredible work.

DId you try the underwater box thing, did it work? It looks like an interesting concept, and a safer way of taking photos underwater than using a fishtank :-)

Yes I definately remember Peter Gowland. When I started photography, he gave me a lot of inspiration through his books. I have two of them which I bought when they were published, "Gowland's Guide to Glamour Photography" (1972) and "The Secrets of Photographing Women" (1981). I still re-read them every couple of years.

Yes, I did build his water box, and it worked. For the life of me, I can't remember which book it was in, but he had a down and dirty set of instructions for it. Only thing, make sure you have a set of quality mirrors for it, as they are reflecting the image to the lens.
By the way, what did you think of his revolving rooftop backdrop?

Yes I remember him well. I have the video tape that Kodak put out that featured him. I have all his books and also the catalogs he sent out to prospective clients which are like posing guides. I also use a number of his techniques such as the wall of light. I even have the original umbrellas that I bought on his recommendation (They were square silver 36" umbrellas and two of them on one light stand with two heads made a wall of light). I still use his basic "poster lighting" for highkey shots.

Cheers,
rfs

Not only do I remember Peter (and his great wife Alice) I still talk to them on occasion (most recently last Xmas). Of course if you know my work, you see Peter's influence all over it, and yes, he has a phenominal website at [urlhttp://www.petergowland.com[/url]. He and Alice were also instrumental in my taking over the Ridgid Tool calendar account when he decided to resign from it six years ago (there's a whole section on it on the website).

But here's one more thing you didn't know (and funny, I was about to post this myself): Monday April 3 is Peter's 90th birthday! If you feel like sending him a birthday greeting, send it to petergowland@petergowland.com or mail it to the address on his website. He is still sharp and active, builds his cameras, and loves to tell stories about the good old days. When I visit I always try to bring a pretty girl with me (Alice doesn't even get jealous) 'cause that's what he lives for! (Sound familiar?)

Regards,
Andy Pearlman
