I have been spending way too much time in the Portfolios section. There are a lot of really great photographers on this site. As well as the usual suspects, there are some that I can't ever remember seeing any of their work before.

I don't see many images that have been rated. Are other people not looking, therefore not rating, or are people not comfortable with posting an opinion.

At this point I have not been, for the most part, giving negative ratings ( below 6) because I am not sure about reactions. Those images I just pass by.

How are others dealing with ratings?

Glenn

I've rated a few and even given some not so good ratings. Bobby_G isn't talking to me any more

Personally I'd like to people to constructively rip what I've got up. But people are inclined to be nice because you could go give them a bunch of low ratings and with so fiew ratings that effects scores fast.

I think this will end up being the best part of the change, once we learn how to use it.

As for Bobby_G he has enough good rating he should be able to handle some bad ones...

I agree. Rip it up. The key is honest constructive critique. I rate honestly. If someone doesnt like it then I guess that is too bad. They just dont want to get better and we can ALL get better.

I have been rating both portfolio and random images that appeal to me. I haven't given a poor rating yet and usually include a comment. I agree this is going to be a very cool feature. I have been receiving ratings as well. All but one so far have been a 7+ and one has been a 2. It's all good cuz if you took the time to rate, it means you like it or not. But, it still got your attention and thats cool with me!

I will say tho, if you take the time to give an image a poor rating. You should also take the time to comment what it is that you don't like, or how it can be improved. A poor rating with no comment will be dismissed by me.

Rick.

So much for that... it looks like the ratings have gone away.

The only problem I have with ratings is sometimes we tend to look to hard at everything perfect in that one person's opinion. Most of the time we really don't try to see what the photog/model was trying to say. over expose and under expose and you can get some really good stuff but if the person rating it doesn't get the point of the photo or what they were trying to say, they think it is bad. Rating is fine if you take the time to LOOK at what the photog or model is trying to say.

If the viewer doesn't get the point of the photo it is bad...

I aggree that the "camera club" syndrome may come into play, where people don't look at the image for what it is, they just look at it to see how it fits "the rules". But just because I call my photos art, doesn't mean that you can't call them crap.

I dont know about the ratings.. one of my images got a 6, one got a 4... but no comments from the people who rated them as to what they were thinking, or why they rated them as they did.

I think if you are going to rate an image.. you should definately put something there as to why you gave that particular rating.

If you cant be specific.. then dont "rate" the image...

I dont care if you rip my image apart.. or really like it.. but please.. if you rate it.. tell me what you are thinking or why you rated it the way you did.

just my 1/2 pennys worth....
