Agreed to do some bridal portraits for a close friend. Never have done them before, not sure what brides look for.

To qualify myself, I've only done a few weddings. The one thing I have learned, is that it's more about what the mother of the bride is looking for. I normally try to find out details in a meeting we have before the shoot.
Is there a theme to the wedding, is it a church wedding or home wedding, big or small. Mothers will always have their opinions on what should be. Bottom line, your trying to satisfy both mother and the bride.
From your photos here, I would say the bride had her own ideas and you went with it. Good job on that.
The few I've done, everyone was different, you just have to get a feel for what they want and make sure the bases are covered. If the check clears, you did good.

It's all about Mom (usually).

My first bridal sitting, back in the day....whew..., was for the B&Ws for the newspaper. Shot in studio well before the actual event, so the papers had them on file, including out-of-state. Mom was there, helped with the gown, veil, the works. All went well, I thought. Next day they came by to see the proofs, I printed as 4x5. The mom and bride glanced at them and the mom almost flew outside. I couldn't figure it out! Did I make her darling daughter THAT ugly?

The mom never returned, too distraught. The bride-to-be came back in, kinda laughing. Then she saw I was panic stricken. She was like "Oh, no! Nothing's wrong. It's kinda funny...it seems it never REALLY hit mom I was getting married until she saw those pictures. They kinda slapped her awake." In her mind, all the planning, the arrangements, it was almost like a rehearsal for some later event, at some later time. The pictures slammed reality home, her baby was indeed getting married, and she couldn't stop crying. The bride later told me she heard her mom crying off and on for the next 2 days.

As for your pics, I love the first one. The shoes make it. Playful, impertinent, part beautiful woman, part tomboy. An absolute treasure. I'd play a bit in your editor, adjust levels on her skin tone and smooth it a little, try to bring out her eyes, maybe lasso and gaussian blur the BG a wee bit, for about 1 stop less DOF effective.

BUT.....will MOM like it.....

Very cute!! Especially the first one! They kind of disgust me though...looks so very springy there and here it's raining and cloudy and cold and damp today.

Ok, I brightened her up a bit using an overlay layer and blurred the background a little more as suggested. I don't want to blur her skin at all as I love her freckles.
