In RG's post on professionalism he makes the statement "It's bad enough the glamour in glamour has been diluted by the adult industry." This got me to thinking. (How scary is that?)

And let me preface what I'm about to say by saying that I'm probably a little prejudiced cuz i do make a fair bit of my money off of adult, altho i also shoot straight up glam as well.

Anyway, while I think there's some creedence to that statement, I'm not convinced that the proliferation of adult (mainly on the web) has impacted the glamour biz as much as the proliferation of digital capture technology has.

The recent rise in adult materials has probably afforded more opportunities to shoot glamour and make a couple of bucks off of it then ever before. Frankly, and for some time now, the adult industry has driven the glamour market in terms of style and other aspects, especially recently since much of the artwork used to promote adult media has gone softcore. (Softcore, btw, translates into glamour images.) if you've ever looked at the artwork on DVDs (or in ads) from companies like Vivid and Wicked and others, you're probably aware that some truly outstanding glamour photography resides in that artwork.

The advent of affordable digital capture technology and processing software, OTOH, has put the ability to shoot glamour, AFFORDABLY AND WITH LESS SKILL REQUIRED, into the hands of many, many more shooters. More than ever before!

So that's my take on it. If you're concerned that glamour has been dilluted, you can just as easily blame it on Canon and Nikon and a bunch of others as you can the adult industry. But I could be wrong.

there's a difference between the schmuck on the street with a digital SLR and you: you've dedicated serious time and energy and resources to LEARNING the craft. but you and others like you aside, yeah, in a nutshell, that's what i'm saying.

Seems to me a lot of Glamour has been influenced since the inception of Playboy. And while I am not too close to the Adult Industry, I see no reason why they can't peacefully coexist...

I like blurring the lines, it is a function of society...

Well, and I'm just talking off the top of my head here, advances in technology have probably made glamour available to the masses, but I don't see this as being unique to photography. I'd be willing to bet that with a couple grand and a little know-how, you could probably buy audio equipment that would allow you to make a pretty decent recording in your basement, and "dilute" the recording industry in the same way.

The internet has also made a ton of information available that was much harder to come by 20 years ago. Now with a little searching, you can find all kinds of free info on lighting, backgrounds, color balance, smoothing skin, whatever. There's certainly no lack of cracked copies of photoshop circulating around.

It's just an inevitable change. You can adapt and find ways to survive, or get run over by those that have. The music industry (although reluctantly) adapted to the rise of MP3 technology by making Napster and itunes work for them.

Anyway, change is always coming. Somebody told me that you can always tell when a fashion trend has ended: everybody's wearing it. Once everybody figured out how to do selective coloring, the once cool idea become old news. Perhaps "glamour" as we know it now is over and it'll either evolve to the next big thing, or move to the back burner to become popular again later (kind of like the thin ties that I've seen coming back out).

Don't know. I don't have that kind of vision to predict what is coming. I leave that sort of stuff to people who do. Then, I miss it and try to catch back up.

an insightful man once labeled america "the great melting pot." He didnt' realize he was talking about much more than the racial and ethnic variety of its people and immigrants.

I'm not a part of the glamour or porn "industries", so I may be completely unqualified to answer this question...but hey, what are internet forums for? haha

I do belive that the meaning of "glamour" has changed a lot in the past 20 years, and it's not clear to me what all the driving factors are. I do miss seeing images that simply portray the beauty and alure of a woman, without the image saying "come jump me!" Webster defines "glamour" as "an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness; especially : alluring or fascinating personal attraction." Please note the word sexual and it's derivitves are not present.

I think the proliferation of digital capture devices has diluted photography in general. With so many free ways to host your images online, there's more and more crap posted every day. This isn't limited to glamour; it's portraiture, landscape, wedding, event, etc, etc, etc. Have you seen the crap that passes for "photos" on MySpace?!?! it has evolved dramatically. i don't think it's going back-burner. in fact, i think it's been exploding like never before... besides what's always been around, lookit the popularity of Maxim, Stuff, and others in recent years. And if adult dilutes glamour it can also be said that glamour dilutes fashion and all of it impacts our culture. i've seen the words "pornification of america" bandied about a lot by the press in recent years. they're simply looking for a convenient scapegoat to lay the blame for a changing culture that many aren't too thrilled about. but if someone thinks adult is solely responsible for pornifying america without looking at glamour and fashion and media and the web and a whole lot of other things that are pornifying it, and they believe adult is the culprit, they are in serious denial of reality. just my opinion for whatever its worth.
