I keep going back and forth on whether I like the following image or not, so I thought I'd solicit opinions from your fine people.

Thanks.

Ok...This is gonna sound harsh but I am in a mood right now waiting for a model.

I dont see anything about this shot that is good. To me it just looks like a snapshot.

Remember though...It is just my opinion and I dont know what you were trying to do.

it all depends on what your going for. at face value, it doesnt look backlit, looks like you hair light is too strong and your main miss fired. if the image came out the way you planned it then my opinion doesnt matter. I did a shot simular to your concept(at least what I think it was) I just added the glare with PS.

I think the backlight is a little hot so her hair is blown right out and the lens flare it causes on the side of her face is not pleasing. Restricting the backlight would give this image a chance.

Like model. Too much PS. Looks real bad on left side of her face on my monitor.

I'm gonna agree with the rest ... it's good to try new things and make mistakes, because that's how we learn. From your images I'd say -- get a lens hood, or flag off that light source so you don't have the lens flare. Add a bit more light to her face ... and, reduce the opacity of the clone brush so you can smooth out the skin without looking so -- Photoshopped.

It took me several tries before I got my backlight images to look decent ... and I'm still working on getting it right. Here's my backlight example. If I remember correctly, I took my old SB-15 speedlight with a yellow gel over it, attached a cheap optical slave to it and put it on the table behind her. Smooth skin courtesy of the Photoshop clone brush.

Thanks for the feedback. The images is actually shot with just one light (behind) and a reflector, which is somewhat wrapped around the camera (you can kinda see that in the reflection. The post processing is a second color dodge layer on the original to bump up the image density and some slight skin softening.

Here is another shot using the model as a flag.

I guess I'm fighting the lack of dyanamic range of the digital. Maybe film would have pulled it off better.

Next time try it with a reflector in front of her to get the bounce back light. Keep practicing it will all fall into place.

A short time ago I’d agreed about film pulling this shot off BUT I still shoot film and transparencies would have a tough time of this as well.

It’s not the medium you are using my friend, it’s mastering the technique.

Once I get some space I can upload images too I’ll be able to show some examples.

For now all I have are words of encouragement and watch out for lens flare.

Cheers
