Check out their portfolio and click on the word 'Before' just above the thumbnails.

Once you've checked this out, tell me if you think this is too much or okay?

Personally I only touchup a slight amount or put a slight blur...this is too 'perfect'.

CELEBRITY

It's all about appearances. Of course all these shots can be taken without photoshop work if you employ a KICK ASS MUA... same result.. different methods.

But I'm not dealing with Celebrity. I am dealing, however, with the Falsehood and Unreal Expectations that I can do the same for the models and subjects I photograph. I probably could but prefer not to.

So it's a personal choice.

I agree... when I was at Mikey's Supershootout Invite, there were MUA's air brushing the foundation on.. The results were stunning! Under the modeling lamps alone, the models looked like they were photoshopped.. their skin was extra smooth..and the rest of the makeup really stood out,..but not in like an over done kind of way either... it was just cool to see in a shoot like that.. I've been at fashion shows where the MUA's did the same thing too.. it's pretty cool, and saves a lot of time applying it the more traditional way..

face is concerned this may be true but there are things done in these images that no MUA can do.

I don't think it's too much at all. I've done similar things to my photo's. I think it depends on what effect you're going for and what you're personal choices on the matter are. I have no problem taking out blemishes or smoothing the skin. I think they're going to far when they change the size of body parts, though.

These are not meant as accurate portraits nor photojournalism. For the purpose intended, they are highly effective.

But then it's not a 'falsehood and unreal expectations' that you can do the same for the models and subjects you photograph. Because, as you say, you probably could but you choose not to.

They don't seem to be doing anything that any of us couldn't do if we were really really good at Photoshop. A good MUA can do wonders with skin. But wrinkles and folds around the waistline or armpits, or celulite on the thighs, etc, are, problems that plague me. (and they don't look good on my models, either -- ) These guys seem to have good PS solutions for those as well. I don't see anything wrong with it.

What most of those actually show is some pretty well executed salvaging of some very marginal images. Look around GG and you'll find ten portfolios of similar quality finished images with little or no manipulation at all within a few minutes. JT Smith, Rolando Gomez, Mike Hickey and JimmyD occur to me just off the top of my head. Just because you're shooting famous people doesn't make your images automatically better...
With a little forethought on lighting, a good MUA, and a co-operative subject (which I grant is probably a little harder with "celebrity" subjects...) wrinkles, blemishes, and so forth are really not a big deal. What we should be aiming at is having that quality of image hitting the ccd, not fixing everything in post.
