I thought it was cute although I'm not sure what the message was - was it the "birth" of a new camera model, or saying it was so easy to use a neonate could do it?

I'm trying to recall where I saw that ad before - same Japanese cast but the dialog was in English. It may be a stereotype that the Japanese have a thing for cameras but I don't think it's necessarily a bad one - I was my company's liaison to our Japanese partner at a previous job and there seemed to be a lot of truth to it when I was there. It's not just photography - the Japanese love technology. Japan has bout 3 times as many robots per capita as the US does, for instance. Cameras are a confluence of many different technologies - optics, mechanical engineering, electronics, chemical engineering (film, inkjet printing, etc), and in my experience the Japanese are just not as technophobic as some Americans still are.

The thing I personally thought was MOST interesting about the ad was the birthing scene. The idea of a whole bunch of people, including the husband, all helping the woman give birth would have been unheard of in Japan not long ago. Traditionally Japanese women would sometimes leave and go home to her family a month before giving birth and then return with the baby. Japanese husband were more like American husbands of the 50's - "Just leave me out of it and let me know when it's over!" Nowadays modern American husbands are expected to attend birthing classes and help their wives in the delivery room, and I guess that custom must be starting to spread to Japan.
