Here is a photo of Kami shot with Canon 20D, 125th at f8, ISO 400, Sigma 70-200 2.8 at 70mm. In the real world we don't always get the photo we envisioned. It would have been easier on a shot like this to have a hair light to light the hat and get the separation wanted. As well it would have been nice to have more light on the face under the hat brim. But sometimes you are shooting fast and you get images that you like, but are lacking in some way. Here is where Photoshop techniques are useful (and RAW images have a lot of play in them):

Here is a shot that shows the steps in making this shot:

Photo on the right is the composite of the two photos on the left. The tools used were layers, a layer mask, and a black and white brush.

The lighting was as seen here:

Except Kami is wearing a little less in the hat trick shot. There was also a reflector at waist level in the hat shot.

Since there was no hair or background light, the hat trick was necessary for bringing out the hat.

Cheers,
rfs

Well hell, I thought I'd come up with something original. I used the exact same technique on this shot, and I thought I was pretty smart for figuring that out.

Ah, but my version of the trick requires a hat!

Hold on. Are you saying that for the group of three shots the right one is finished composite of the first two? I seriously hope I missed something here because I see brightened background off the edges of the hat in that third shot. Especially off the top of the hat. It looks more like a ghosted error in placement or something. The main shot you posted, is that the finished shot or your example of the shot missing seperation? I'm sorry, I'm confused and just had to say something because that third shot from the group just looks wrong to me.

Thanks!

The main shot, the top shot of the post is a shot using the technique illustrated in the second three frame shot. It is not even the same photograph as you can tell (different expression, etc). The three frame shot was just a rough example of the process but I didn't make any special effort on the right hand shot of the three so there may be some ghosting or misalignment (although I doubt it is misaligned since when I drag one image onto the other I hold down the shift key to make sure they align perfectly). I also cropped the right shot of the three and adjusted the curves some more after combining the two left images.
Sorry for the confusion.
Cheers,
rfs
