So, we had to analyze some advertisements in a public speaking class, and one of the examples to be analyzed read 'She's a doctor today because her role models weren't models.'
I found this to be rather insulting...but, my teacher thought that it was a rather good point. In fact she said that most models wouldn't qualify to get a college education. But that's not the point...
What in God's name is the Ad Council thinking? the link to the actual advertisement is http://www.academic.org/nicole.html Maybe it just offended me? Who knows...

I don't fully disagree, not cuz I think models are stupid, they just dont need to be booksmart.. They are very much streetsmart at a very early age.

But I bet more than 1 of those doctors modeled to pay for that education. Sometimes the whole story isn't told just to sway the opinions of others. Like most things in life.

One of the models listed here or elsewhere IS a doctor.

Her medical specialty is fitness / physical therapy and she is competing in a bikini type competition in California about now, as I recall. I think she lives in the Virgin Islands.

Generalizations usually have exceptions.

One of my first models was in school to be a doctor , Now she is a real DR and working with heart problems with people. I never liked the AD Council very much. That is such a bunch of crap. Peaple come in all different types some are smart and some are not. I know a DR or two that are not the brightest color crayons in the box but could be great models...

The Ad Council doesn't necessarily use well-crafted ads. For example, while the original "this is your brain on drugs" was creative and on point, the numerous derivative follow-ups were, to be kind, strained and derivative.

The point they're trying to make is valid - girls and young women need to experience women in all aspects of society if they are to have role models in all venues of life. However, I agree that the phrasing is rather condesending towards modeling, maybe even derogatory.

As for your teacher's "most models wouldn't qualify to get a college education:, I am a university teacher and I assure you that - at least seemingly- at most US universities and colleges, if the individual can sign their name, they are qualified. Whether those people can benefit from it is another issue.

Can't agree with the generalization. I've shot a PharmD, MD, and a BSRN. Smart, beautiful women.

Well, I took it to be offensive. Like I told my teacher, I have done some modeling, mostly when I was younger. But, I have put myself through college and am graduating from Auburn in December with a pretty high GPA. Most people cannot say that.
I got asked to leave that class for disruption! LOL I thought it to be rather humorous that she would 'ask me to leave' for displaying my opinions. I had the class last night and she came in and said that she hoped all of my 'negative tension' was gone because it was not beneficial to other students.
I guess I am just an angry person Grrr...

Imo I happen to believe, that this falls under the same as atheletes. There not particularly saying that models are dum. there saying that if girls only have role models that are models they will never get the exposure to these other fields. Just like the kid that says I want to an NBA star. all he sees is the fame, money, because thats all he ever sees.
Their were a couple of AD catch phrases that had everyone saying, "I want to be like mike, and "I am Tiger woods!". You never hear commercials say " I want to be like DR. Smith!"

atheletes and models deal with the same stereo types! the ad is just trying to get kids and there parents more envolved.

Yeah, I'd be offended. This is the type of work that comes from lazy "ad execs" who can't think their way out of a paperbag.

Until the prerequisites to become a model stipulate an IQ under 80, this will continue to be a ridiculous generalization.
