I found this interesting. I took the first original in-camera crop and cropped it differently to see the difference in "emotion" the photo protrays. Same expression, different "feeling"?

Too much coffee?

Not enough?

Comment if you want. Share thoughts. Ignore me. Whatever you feel like doing, it's your time, I've wasted enough of it.

David:

I like the crop on #3 but would like to see #2 cropped just as tight. I think there's too much eye socket and nose left over on #2 for the effect you've acheived in #3.

OK, the 3rd one is cropped the best I feel. I also like #1 for it's raw nature. Maybe it's just the tone of it.

This reminds me a an assignment in photoschool. We had to take a close face shot with no head tilt, print it normal and then again with the negative flipped. Then we put the two like sides together and mounted them together. The differences in some peoples faces can be shocking. Some of the samples looked like aliens or something. The excersize was to make us aware of the uneven nature of most of our faces and sculls. This isn't a good example because the model, like most beautiful people are pretty symetrical, but you get the idea:

Craig's comments pretty much mirror my thoughts. You aren't seeing differences in emotion so much as differences in the symmetry of the model's face, and assigning emotional weights to those differences.

I also agree that #2 might be stronger cropped a tad tighter.

Nice experiment.

She looks like she's grimacing in #2. Just my two cents.

That's exactly what I was trying to say, you just said it better. The differences in "expression" give a different perceived "emotion" to the viewer.....I was just playing and noticed it.

Very interesting. I've always known this, but never actually seen it done to illustrate the point.

I see what you're saying. I may play with that, I may not. The photo isn't really for any purpose, I was just screwin around.
