While tossing around the idea of building a ring light, Tim Harris a local tog in Houston offered to sell me his. Only paid a few dollars more than the materials cost so it was a no brainer.

Here are the first images with the new toy...

Sorry Bobby, but I find the catchlights kind of creepy on the close-ups, reminds me of fangs. Not so bad on the 3/4 shot.

I seen some rather big round flourescent bulbs at Lowes the other day, I think they where about 14-15" in diameter. I thought of creating a ring light with one of them.

What length of bulbs are you using for yours and what wattage total?

I like the skin tones in these photos.

I like the catch lights in them as well if they were full squares... it is not easy to do with out using photoshop I know because I have yet to make a full square in the eyes with my set up. I always have to do some PS to get the full square in the eyes.

I have been thinking about making one of these homemade ring lights. Beautiful skin tones.

Lovely model. I don't find the eyes distracting in the closeups. How large are the bulbs? How was the light made? How is it powered?

Joe the setup on this particular light is 8 5000k 4' long bulbs. The stand supports 4 DOUBLE shop light sets. All have their own power switch so I have some flexibility as to how much or little light I want to use. I'll take a photo of it today and post it...

As for the catchlights...they're different for sure and as Ron C says above, it is difficult to get a perfect square... but you can't beat how it brings out the skin tones.

The catchlights creep me out, especially on the close-up.

the girl is hot, the light spreads nicely and is soft and creamy, the catchlight is alien.
