I have a client ( printing company Point One Graphics) who allows me the freedom of producing a calendar every year. I get to come up with the concept, art direct and shoot it. I couldn't have asked for a better working relationship.

Just after 2006's issue 2006 pin-up calendar was put to bed Borianna ( makeup artist and creative consultant) and I started brainstorming on what to do for 2007.

She came up with the idea of Fairy Tales. Over the course of a couple of months and several cups of coffee we decided on the first image to shoot... Red Riding Hood.

We set the date for around the beginning of Febuary.

Now I had to start pulling this together... a couple of meetings with Lori ( amazing stylist) Borianna, and Alexander ( Set builder & decorator) set the general outline. Eusebia was always helpful in reminding me of the details that I was missing.

Intially I saw Red in fetish gear... PVC all around... but as the discussions took place Red became a little more innocent. As Lori was shopping in all the wardrobe houses she found this amazing black skirt, which dictated a further softening of Red.

The Cape was no where to be found, so we had to commission it to be built.

I thought that casting was going to be difficult. Borianna suggested a model she knows, Jelina. She came by for a go see... as she walked in the door I knew we had found Red.

For the set design Alexander has some really interesting ideas... trees made of wires and strofoam balls ( it was a really interesting idea, but not for this shot). We ended up renting some trees from the CBC and a backdrop from the backdrop connection and it was time to put things together.

Two days before the session we had a storm, which was good. My session cancelled that day which allowed us to start building early.

This is the backdrop and start of folage.

This is with the trees in place

Starting to work out lighting

One of the biggest issues I had was lighting the Wolfs hand... this shot is Eusbebia as stand in and Alexander as arm.

About 1/2 an hour before we were to start shooting I still wasn't happy with the claw... after some disscusion we decided to back light it.

This is an image of the set. further to the right, and out of frame is another green light and a gridded face light.

This is a close up of the lighting on the Wolf side. In the foreground is the dry ice fogger.

So after months of planning, meetings, fittings, set building and lighting I ended up with:

I think it was worth it.

I try and remember to take "set" shots, but i ususally remeber after the set has been dismantled.

I am aiming for the end of march for the next one.

This should go into a photography book to show the work involved in setting up a professional shot.

I'm impressed.

Great work Glenn. It relly showa up in the final immage. The lighting is great and the fog machine adds a nice little touch. You've set the bar high for your first month. I look forward to seeing the next months work.

Awesome idea, and great unfolding of the way you put it together.
Gives someone like myself something to strive for.

Once you start looking at the "classic" stories it is difficult to know were to go... there are just too many ideas.
