My first glamour shots on a white background. I usually go for dramatic contrasts on a black background. Comments and critiques welcome.

Howard,

I think your background is a little too bright. The highlights are blown out along the back of the model. I took a look at your PBase site and some of those have hightlights blown out too but some of them don't. I think if you moved the model a little further from the background you'd have less spill.

I agree with Josh about the areas that are blown out, but you can fix that in post, I would also suggest loosing the towel she is sitting on. It hides part of her foot and is distracting. Other than that I like the image...nice work!

One thing you can do to to define the edges and help keep them from getting blown out is to place black panels or fabric on either side of your model. Place them like you would reflector panels. The black has the effect of defining the edge between your model and the background by creating a subtle contour shadow. The panels work great for photographing white on white too.

Chip,

Did you use white panels on the sides of the model for this black on black shot in your post? Thanks for sharing the great info.

No, this is a three light setup. One white 60" umbrella on each side and in front of the model, feathered. One head w/ 30 degree grid placed behind the model for rim lighting.
