Aparently this is a freeware alternative to PhotoShop. Anyone using this?

http://www.gimp.org/

For those of you prone to stealing software, ahem, I mean extending the testing phase, this might be a legal way out....

I haven't used it but it comes up a lot in a number of photography forums I'm on. The consensus seems to be that GIMP is in the same category as PS Elements or PaintshopPro, but not full-blown Photoshop.

Still, you can't beat the price.

I've used the GIMP at home for about a decade. It's limited to an 8 bit color depth and doesn't have any provision for color space management. Other than that it's a pretty good piece of software. It's a bit quirky, but has quite a bit of functionality. There are tons of tutorials and other resourses on the web, and even a book or two out there on using it. There's also an active user community and a fair number of plugins for it, though nothing near what's out there for Photoshop. It's more than adequate for publishing to the web, and if you have other means for managing your color space it's fine for hard copy too.

If you're looking for a program that handles 16 bit color depths and supports color management, check out Picture Window Pro from Digital Light and Color. You can try it free for 30 days, after which it costs around $90.

I too have been using The GIMP for quite some time (not quite a decade, but around 8 years). The three main things Photoshop users complain about The GIMP for are:

1. limited to 8 bit colour depth,
2. No colour management,
3. It doesn't use "adjustment layers"

If those 3 things were addressed in a future release, it would be a serious contender. The third party plugin side would not be a real competitor to photoshop, but it is great software, with a similar interface to photoshop. I actually prefer The GIMP, and the windows version has come a long way.
