If you will please tell me what you think of this shot. I shot this with a nikon n90s camera, nikon 28-105 3.5/4.5 lens, kodak tmax 100 film, single 640ws monolight shooting thru a white 36in. umbrella. Developed and printed in a darkroom and scanned into photoshop on a flatbed scanner. Thanks

I think its a bit too contrasty and the shadows seem pretty hard. You must have had the umbrella pretty far away from her since usually a large white light source will lend itself to softer shadows. Somehow you managed to totally burnout the area around the nose and below the eye. There is also a hot spot on the wall behind that is burnt out. So I would have expected the shoulder to be burnt out also. Are you sure there was only one light. There also seems to be an odd Shadow below the eye on the left that sort of tapers off toward the hair. There is nothing really wrong with the background burn out because I think it adds to the photo's appeal. But the burn out on the face always distracts from the photo. I'd rather see the burnt out area on a shoulder or leg, etc.

cheers,
rfs

Thanks for you critique. Any help or advice I recieve is always appreciated and (lol) yes I am positive there was only one light. I positioned the light approximately 8 ft. from her at about a 30-35 degree angle with light head approximately 7 ft high to try to get light on her hair. Her hair is as black as coal. The wall you refer to is the back of a "black" couch and she is lying on it. The burnout on her face is much stronger in the post than it is in the origional print but I see what you are talking about. I can not get the detail into photoshop that is in the print "8 x 10". It is hand printed and negs was developed in a darkroom. I have tried to scan on a norritsu and an agfa minilab, and burn to a cd but the quality s--ks from both. I do not know what else to do. Thanks again. Roger
