Okay, so I am being melancholy or whatever as I take down the Austin studio. I am also deleting all those old emails between me and 'models' other than those who I count as family. A few of them I have actually sent emails to and said basically 'what happened?'. Now believe me I am sure 'real models' could write a book about photographers or supposed to be photographers. But that is my point. If you were to die in a week what business would you close out? I mean I am cool with my family and friends, the majority of people I have worked with but who did I miss? And if I did should I really care?

Certainly I am an old dude from the baby boomer generation and maybe we think about that more than young folks. I know that my children totally understand 'treat others as you would have them treat you', because everytime I travel to where they live people their age and older come up to my wife and I and rave about how our sons are so important to them.

So I wonder here. I am fully cognizant of the fact that people are the product of their environment and the time they developed in. What I can not understand is ...... apparently not important to a a growing number of folks. And, in typical reponse, 'who cares?'

Mike, I don't think that it is a product of when or how we were raised. I think, and I am a boomer, too, that it comes with a sense of completion. If you will, we can see the finish line. There is a realization that not all contacts turned into friendships or family or even professional committments. But what if...? Would our lives be so much more enriched? When I teach Time Management, I include an exercise that runs the students from today to the grave in a very short time, requiring them to write out what they would do at certain benchmarks. Invarably, the committment to family and friends is the strongest sentiment at the end. Takes a while to get them back up for the rest of the class, but it is an eye opener. See, guys like you and I have spit in the Devil's eye more than once. It would be nice to put a final polish on this thing, even if it is going to be another 40 or so years. 96 nah!

Well, if I'm understanding your post, and your sentiment, I can only reply to the question of "Who Cares?" with "YOU DO!" Don't believe that's a bad thing either. There's only one person who everyone has to live with daily and that's yourself. Everyone can ponder the meanings of their life and wonder if they touched anyone or if they even cared. Believe me, you not only touched lives but you have also created work that will outlast your grandchildren. Matter of fact, if I remember correctly you were military. So you have touched lives and helped maintain freedoms for others that you don't even know, but you did care about. So even if you think folks don't care, or if you think you worked with no graditude, believe me, it's there. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but some day it'll be there. Even if you don't see or never recieve it.
On a personal note, my whole life is dedicated to the one day I retire and I can put a computer in my back yard so every morning bright and early I can pee on it till it rusts to the ground! <LOL> GODSPEED!!

Thanks for the feedback. My thought was more that I wonder why people don't work harder at treating others with respect. Of course I know some families that don't even treat each other with respect, but such is life. Take care.

I have seen the effects FIRST HAND of parents emotionally abusing children. Breaking the pattern is really difficult.

Respect is of foremost importance.

Thanks Mike.

P.S.

Did I miss something? Why are you closing your studio?

Good to have you back. Yep I am moving to Nashville and rejoining the corporate world. I'll have a photography business on the sad, or as an aggressive hobby as a minimum.

I don't know that I have anything on point to address your question, but I will note that I STILL hope to become you when/if I grow up. In the words of my favorite singer, there are two types of people in the world; those that give a damn, and those that don't. You do, and it's obvious to everybody who's ever dealt with you. Thanks for being you! Darn Nashville, anyway!
