The Photographer is a very cool film. It's about (of course) a photographer and some photographs, although it's not super technical (in fact, I don't believe any actual photography term other than "contrasty" is ever used.) But it's all about vision and what it means to be an artist. It's also a really interesting story if you're into mystical happenstance. And the Oracle is in it. (The woman who played the Oracle in the last Matrix film, that is.) Netflix has it available for rental.

Somebody on some board I read recommended it a while ago and I just got around to watching it last night. (Been sitting on my TV for two weeks.) If it was here and this is redundant, I apologize, but I honestly couldn't remember.

Your use of this term captured my attention. What, exactly, is a "photographer type?" Is it a person who adopts the trappings of a photographer? (e.g., a person often seen with a camera in hand while wearing one of those vests with lots of pockets for film and stuff and with a light meter dangling from his or her neck like a necklace?) Is it someone with business cards that read, "Photographer," who hands them out to pretty girls at malls? Is it someone who wears cologne that smells like fixer and always carries a large, faux-leather, portfolio filled with artsy B&W prints of naked girls and ethereal landscapes?

Inquiring mind(s?) want to know.

Actually, that was a typo. I meant to say "photography types." By that I mean "people who are interested in photography." Not necessarily even just photographers.

As far as what a "photographer type" is, that's a good question. I would say that in the context of this film and people might who enjoy it, it would be those who at least part of the time consider themselves artists, rather than reporters or recorders. (Ironically, though, the photographs in the movie are almost all journalistic in nature to varying degrees.) The main dramatic conflict is the protagonist's loss of his artistic vision in the face of his commercial success, what it means to him, and what he will do to get it back. If you like to think about that sort of thing, then you might find the movie interesting.

I don't mean to imply, however, that the movie is staid or excessively artsy. It isn't. Most of the actual plot involves a gradually increasing crew of eccentric late-night New Yorkers (is there some other kind?) who join the photographer in a search for ten photographs which are scattered throughout the city. While there are serious scenes, including a somewhat violent mugging, the movie is mostly an intellectual comedy of the absurd. (Best line: "I thought you'd be hanging out with Miss Glamourpuss.")

Hmmm, we talkin movies with a photography interest are we...

How about BLOW UP, the quintessential fashion photography movie and inspiration for... gulp... Austin Powers.

Or EYES OF LAURA MARS, Fay Dunnaway if memory serves me as a fashion shooter...

Then there's BLADE RUNNER with Harrison Ford doing a photoshop number on Sean Young's image.

What's the one with Robin Williams as the photo processor? Or the one with Julia Roberts in which she is a shooter who gets involved with someone's kids. Can't recall the titles just now.

There have been a slew of movies with photography somehow worked into the plot. <center>
