My school is having a formal and they had asked me to be the photographer at the event, I was wondering what would be a good amount to ask for? They told me to give them a number but I have never done this before let alone done anything where I was paid. I figure I would include lighting rental costs but I was wondering what would be a good amount, any thoughts would help immensely.

How many pictures will you be taking in total? How much is it costing you to rent lights? What type of package are you offering? How much is it going to cost to put this package togeter? How much do you want to make on the shoot?

I used to do this kind of shoot when I was in college (over 15 years ago). Depending on the package, my package was 2 5X7's for $5.00 - like I said I did this a long time ago. The cost of the light rental and processing was figured in to the cost and I usually made around $100.00 (give or take) for each shoot.

I'm sure that you will need to adjust for inflation.

I did prom pictures for years, up until last year, and charged $15 for 2-5X7, 4-Walletts and two of Tap Graphics cheapest folders for the 5X7's. I learned over the years that it is confusing for them and for me if I offer different packages. It is easier if every picture is printed with the same package and saves the time waiting for them to choose a package.

Another time saver is to deliver the pictures in clear-window envelopes rather than keeping track of names. This may not work well in a large school but is great in a small school.

We've done several of these and it really comes down to the quantity of photo packages sold if your going to make a little money. We sell a package that includes 1 5x7 and 2 4x6 prints for $12.00 dollars. We offer extra 5x7's for $6 and 4x6's for $3. It takes about 30 packages to break even if you consider lights, time, and lab costs. If its a small group that may not generate enought packages then you need to decide if you want to give your time for less (or free) in exchange for the experience. Good Luck, Jeff

Way too many years ago I worked a prom and learned one important lesson.

Price your packages so they come out to an even dollar amount after you add tax. You were remembering sales tax right?

We priced our package with some normal amount like $5.95 and then had to add sales tax of some percent and they ended up like $6.23. Making change was a royal pain and we ran out and had to have someone go get more.

In Indiana where I did this, you can't put the tax in the price of the product, but can still figure out what to charge so you end up with an even $5.

We've all been assuming you are doing portraits. Do they just want you to be an even photographer and take informal pictures? If that's so figure your cost and add what you want to make and quote that.
