Attalla's Holley Dorrough will appear in Playboy magazine

Since she learned what a model is, Holley Dorrough has wanted to be one.
Mission accomplished.
The 19-year-old Attalla native will be Playboy magazine's "Playmate of the Month" in April. She now lives in Los Angeles and is also pursuing a music career.
Dorrough's career has been a whirlwind. She started modeling while still a student at Etowah High School. She graduated in 2004, and just over a year later was partying with Hollywood glitterati at the Playboy Mansion, where she met Hugh Hefner.
"He looked at me and kind of looked at me and smiled. I said, `Hi, I'm Holley, your next Playmate,'" she recalled.
That was on a Saturday night. The following Monday, she got the call.
Hefner, it seems, agreed with her estimation.
Through her childhood, people asked Dorrough if she was in modeling. She didn't get started until she went to Guntersville to have her high school senior portraits made.
Dorrough and her mother, Lisa, took the opportunity to ask the photographer, Marc Christopher, about modeling.
Christopher has a standard answer for people interested in modeling, and the Dorroughs had to hear it.
"The first thing I do is try to talk them out of it because most people have no idea of what it's all about," he said.
That didn't deter her.
"I could see that she had a very, very strong desire," he said. "That's what it takes, is a fire in the belly."
Christopher put Dorrough in touch with other photographers and put some fashion shots on the Internet.
"By the first night she had over 20,000 views," Lisa Dorrough said.
It took time to build Dorrough's portfolio and gain exposure. Her mother said every weekend for about two years was spent on an out-of-town shoot, and Dorrough didn't have a paying job for more than a year.
That's the kind of life that Christopher tries to warn people about when they want a modeling career.
"It's not for everybody," he said. "Most people don't have what agencies are looking for. It's tough work. It's not easy."
Dorrough's persistence, however, opened doors. She met Rolando Gomez at an event that matches photographers and models. He's since taken pictures of Dorrough that will be used on the cover of a book of his work.
`Sweet and innocent'
Dorrough once said she would never do nudity, but that changed when she saw her first issue of Playboy.
"Playboy is a lot more classy than any other magazine that contains nudity," she explained.
"Playboy's classy," she said. "It's tasteful. Hef likes his girls to appear sweet and innocent. The way he describes it is (as) a celebration of beautiful women."
After Gomez submitted pictures of Dorrough, Playboy had her do a 14-hour test shoot. She said it's designed to "see if you're Playmate-quality and -material."
Apparently she was.
Lisa Dorrough said she hasn't been sold on the idea of her baby girl being in such a magazine.
"I cried for about two months," she said.
People in town have asked her about her daughter's upcoming centerfold spread. She explains that she's glad her daughter is "becoming successful," and said most people respect that.
"We don't support her decision to be a Playmate," she said, "but we support her."
Holley Dorrough said some people she's known have doubted her career. She's heard rumors that she had breast implants or has made it to Playboy simply as a housekeeper in the famed mansion.
She denied both stories and predicted people won't have room to doubt when the magazine hits stores in March.
"When my issue comes out, it will be in their face," she said.
Using her voice
Dorrough got her music start early, singing as a child at Malone Baptist Church and as a sixth-grader backing up someone else. Her first big role, relatively speaking, came in the 10th grade, singing "I Turn to You" at a school event.
She remembered it getting a standing ovation.
Dorrough says she has an agent and has worked with Billy Steinberg, writer of such hits as Madonna's "Like a Virgin," Whitney Houston's "So Emotional" and the Divinyls' "I Touch Myself."
Despite all her lofty professional goals, Dorrough has something more down-to-earth in the back of her mind. By the time another decade has passed, she hopes to be married with a child or two, living in a nice home near the ocean or in the mountains.
"I want the whole successful career," she said, "but at the same time, I want the normal life."
For now, she will continue to live in California, which she says is the best place for the work she's doing now. She was recently on an MTV dating/reality program, "Next," another avenue for Dorrough to gain exposure.
"She's definitely not a dumb blonde," Christopher said. "Her parents have raised her very, very well. She's smart and tenacious in going after what she wants."
