Hey all, I was inspired by a post I read at another site and was
wondering...What do you all do to keep in such great shape, especially
this time of the year? I always seem to gain 5 pounds as soon as it
gets cold outside. It's hard not to when I'm suddenly ravenous and
have to eat all the time. Anyone else have this problem? I used to run,
but running wore away my cartilage in my knees so that won't work
anymore. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have a good friend of mine who was in your exact situation (running-wise) a few years ago. He switched to cycling and purchased an indoor trainer for the foul-weather months. Cycling is more expensive (equipment-wise) than running, but it's much easier on the knees.

I wish I had an answer but I'm going through my own weight issues. Although I've just started jogging on the treadmill and weight training, along with a healthy diet. I tried the kickboxing stuff and my knees can't take it.

I just had to take a minute to tell you that you do NOT need to worry. I'm sure that 5 pounds on you is nothing. You are very tall and slender and have a beautiful figure. You have no worries, Candice. You are stunning as is.

If you have access to any local gyms, most of them have eliptical machines. They still allow a running motion but they are a lot easier on the knees.

I looked at your portfolio and you're absolutely gorgeous. Please don't worry about about five pounds - it's not going to make any significant difference.

Young women are entirely too obsessed with their weight and rates of eating disorders are skyrocketing. Recent studies suggest that anorexia nervosa has about a 10% fatality rate! Newsweek ran a cover story in their Dec 5 issue

I've worked with beautiful models of a variety of shapes and sizes and I say don't worry about it. If you need a low-impact aerobic exercise just for conditioning I suggest swimming, biking or a wind-rowing machine (such as the Concept II). Depending on how bad your knees are, an eliptical trainer might be a possibility.

I have horrible knees, and the eliptical is one of the few that doesn't cause me any problems. Even walking on a treadmill messes me up, so I'm all for the eliptical.

As for the 5lbs and anorexia, that will always be a problem until the modelling industry itself changes. As long as anorexic looking models are what are being hired, thats what most models will strive for. If the industry changes to start hiring and showcasing more realistic looking models at healthier weights, then the perceptions of whats beautiful and acceptable will start to shift in that direction.

I do as well, I just deal with it because it is a natural reaction to the cold weather. Your body builds a bit extra fat to stay warm. If you eat right, it will fall off fast.

Can't wait till spring!

Do you do any weight training along with your aerobics? I'm guessing that you have a fast metabolism, and if you keep your reps high and eat sensibly you won't bulk up like so many girls are worried about doing if they start using weights. Muscle burns calories. Yes, your weight could stay the same and actually increase some due to muscle gain, but you'll be burning fat. Don't let numbers mess with your head. A mirror's the best thing to evaluate what you want to change, not a scale.

Not that you need any changing, though.
