These are the images shot last Saturday using my new “home made light source I detailed in “The Teaser and a New Toy thread.

These two ladies are friends of mine and are not models or ever have been. They graciously accepted my invitation to be live fodder for my experiments with light and be the subject of comment by my fellow GG’ers while they speak their minds on my work.

While Candy (my friend of three years) is aware of herself Sarah very shy. She was nervous, not because of the photo shoot, but because she didn’t have the confidence that she could take a good picture. The last time she had any pictures taken of her, it was her senior portrait, and she didn’t like those. Little did she know who she was working with, (yes I have an ego.) You decide which is which.

Photoshop on each=blemish touch up, curves and cropping.

Enough with the talk. On with the pictures. Your comments are appreciated.

They may not be models, but that dish does a heck of a job I believe.
Ok, time to make one.

I would guess that Sarah is the second woman, and Candy the first, because the second seems more uncomfortable as subject.

The light looks wonderful, Rick. Enough directionality to "sculpt" nicely, but soft enough to flatter. These were with the light blocker and the shoot-through umbrella, right?

Thanks for sharing the construction as well as the images.

My take

#2 i like alot because of the lighting and hre hair. not only that, but she does show herself at a natural state. wonderful smile and it shows in the face as well.
--again, the lighting is really nice here.

--except fur coats. no, no! big no no. but since this is just testing... still---- no no!

heheh.

#3-- something about #3 i like. however, the arm below threw me off a little and it would make the photo a little more pleasant because this one is more relaxed, than #4. her eyes and her skin tone make this photo. and the close up sho is nice.

#1 and #4 like i said are a bit more on the non relaxed side, and this is understandable since they are test subjects.

the lighting and shading you did for version 2 for each photo on the other hand is very nice.

Hey Chris:

Heyyyy brother, what have you got against my faux fur? No amimals were harmed and it only took three barrells of oil to make. (not to mention that the clients love 'em)

Both #1 & #4 were at the begining of the session and #2 & #3 were at the end so you hit their comfort levels on the spot. Once they became more relaxed the better the images became.

(I like #2 too)

John:

Oops. Sarah is the young one at the top.

No light blocker with these. All of these were shot through an umbrella from the 16" white reflector.

In this one of Sarah, the light is low (7') and I was bouncing light off the ceiling through a soft box with another strobe. The other spectral highlights you see in her eyes is from the dressing room.

In this one I'm using the new toy by itself. No reflectors to bounce any light back from the dark side.

In this picture of Candy I used the new toy as the main light with a background light and a hair light. My mistake, but I also had the flash sync at 180/sec instead of 125/sec, hence the black line on the left. I'm just glad the background light I used didn't extend to far to her right or the image would have been toast.

Thanks for your input John. It's always good to hear from you.
