Ok...i've been lurking on this board for over 6 months. Thought I would finally step up and post some pix and also get some advice.

Here's a couple shots i took of my neighbor's 9 yo daughter a couple of days ago. Survey says? I was happy with the headshot (kitchen lighting at high ISO) but on the reclined pose I'm still working on getting that perfect lighting.

My question is... what do you guys mostly shoot and meter your hot lights (non-strobes) at? The reclined shot was metered at 2.8/125. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

thanks! Tom

I know nothing about hot lights and meters, but I do know that the black and white shot is adorable. I'm sure her mother will cherish that shot for years!

Nice job...and glad you are finally posting!

Just a suggestion, I would use a gray card and meter off that. The image of the girl is adorable. I would use a white refelector and bounce the light out of the shadows under the eyes. i hope my advice helped

Thanks for all the suggestions! She was actually a little sleep-deprived and so the grey under her eyes were from post-editing removal of her bags...

Question...what F-stop do you usually shoot at in studio?

Not bad, I really can't add anything that hasn't been said.
As for portrait type shots I try for F4 or F5.6, as that is the fastest I have.
With my new D70 I now have F3.5 so I'll be trying that, but I like shallow DOF myself for the type shot your showing here.

It's been awhile but I think I shot this at F5.6 and I wish I had gone for the F4.

I am not the expert, but in my experience you need more light on the subject to get the pupils smaller. I've had great images like this in the past that I don't like but the client loved. Highlights seem a bit blown out on my monitor. Opinions are like assholes, this is just mine, nothing personal!

Lessee... underage model not a relative, looks like a violation of forum guidelines to me!

Could it be maybe there's something in the forum guidelines about that... ya suppose? You DID read the forum guidelines, didn't you?

Yes...but the verbiage was a bit confusing. Not a problem...i'll take down the pix. Thanks to everyone who's provided feedback so far.

Yes, the Rule 6 verbiage isn't very clear, and is somewhat contradictory. Hopefully, it'll be simplified someday.
