Or maybe just a self reevaluation.... What do I have to do to be succesful(profitable) in this passion of ours, PHOTOGRAPHY. Do I have to be the assistant to an established photog in my town for umpteen years and then branch out on my own? Is there need for a professional assistant out there? What would qualify me as a professional assistant... or personal assistant? Well thanks for reading this far. I guess all this new years resolutions kinda got me thinking....

Thanks,
Luis

Somewhat of a general question. But to be profitable takes 90% more knowledge than photography. Business, marketing, etc. is what will make you profitable (speaking in general terms).

What type of photography do you enjoy? Weddings, portraits, seniors, etc. What's the market like around you? There are just too many "unknowns" to answer your question.

First and foremost though, don't worry about making a $$$. Concentrate on doing what you love, learn and grow as much as you can, and do it to the best of your ability. The rest will fall into place with the time is right.

Just my two cents.

I'm with you on this Luis, I would much rather be takin' photos, but the
bills are getting paid with what I'm doin'. (Mechanic for the city of Nashville)

It's real scarey to think about switching up with no benefits, insurance or whatever. Hopefullly when I'm old enough
to retire, I will still be able to see and wont scare away all the purty girls . Oh wait....I think that's already happening

I hate asking this when I will not be so availiable for about 48 hours, but,,,

"What are you willing to do to get where you want to go?"

fill in your answer here:_____________________________________________ _____
================================================== ==========================
My short answer is----

It takes, Talent, Technology, Time, and Tenacity to be successful. It helps to
be a master of all four requirements. These are broad terms, but every suggestion you will get will fall under one of these four categories.

Luis

First, I don't think there are assisting jobs in Corpus. There aren't assisting jobs in Houston - not ones you can live on. I have had several recent photography graduates contact me about assisting jobs - I use an assistant once in a while.

Second, to be a successful (profitable) photographer in a smaller market you have two choices. 1) travel 2) shoot what the market wants - weddings, events, portraits, etc.

Being somewhat new compared to most, I can relate to your feelings there. I live in a very small community myself and I have to go with the flow here. Even finding a part time job is hard around here.
Just keep the faith and keep pluggin away, we'll get there one day.

Hey Luis, I am all to familiar with the feeling. My family is down your way and they have been showing me the current photography work on the coast. There is definately a need and work for a good photographer on the commercial aspect of the business.
So many possibilities so little time. Something you might check into. Do you ever do coastal work?

Mark,

Thank you for your reply. By coastal work do you mean do I shoot at the beach? Any chance I get... I have offered shootng on location on the PI national seashore, the longest undeveloped beach in the nation, but no takers yet.. I figure most people who have lived here most of their life do not look at the beauty of this natural resource, what they see is SAND!! Forum admin rjwarren and fellow GGer Jbrown have beautiful and exquisite work from South Padre.... Thanks for your reply... Decided I'm gonna take some business courses at the local JC to work on my business and perhaps marketing side of photography...
