I love how you title your posts Don! It grabs my attetion right away. If you only worked for a major network, you could name a new reality show after this thread, I'd watch it, as long as it delivered. Oh, my sick mind comes up with too many ideas that would not be fitting here on when a model should smile or not.

Those photos work. You wouldn't smile in the last two. If you had the same expression as in the last two in the first two, you would look... not really nice.

There's a time to smile and not to smile. The trick is learning when. I think you're gorgeous and when you're making a photo that looks like you're having fun, then you should smile and smile big. When you're selling a product make it look like you're enjoying the product. When it's art or something else, then throw an appropriate look.

Don't limit yourself.

It's a shot of a suburban wife (I'm pretty sure DeAnn has a day job though) but that's not what the story is. She's kneeling (rather than sitting) on a purpose built stage of some sort (threaded rod, eyebolts). She's chained in the cinematic style of a lion or some dangerous creature on display.... She's a chained woman... a fairly common theme; you even see it in mainstream fashion... Kneeling and wearing a collar are dead giveaways that the theme is about dominance and submission.

She's chained because she's a captive, the lingerie implies the motivation is sexual... not for real, but for fun... people do that... No humiliation, no pain, just captivity... submission to the viewer. Bondage is THE most common fetish or form of kinky sex in the developed world.

I think they were going for an expression of duress.
Stress, fear, anger... those are tough emotions to act out and capture in a still image because they are so visceral that people easily recognize whether they're genuine or not.
For my money, I'd like to see how well they develop the theme. It's balls'y. I admire people who will take a risk.

Don, Don, Don, my good man, it's very simple. What are you selling? That's the question. Answer that and you will know know when to smile and not to smile.

Oh, and not just anyone is able to sell anything either. Just because Crystal can really make you wanna hop in the tub and play with her rubber ducky



Doesn't mean that everyone can do that.

Ginger for example is a little more adept at making you think she is steaming for you.

And then there are times when the image is about sex, but not overtly, like with Jessica here.



This is never cut and dry, black and white, whatever metaphor you want to use. Find what works best for the subject you're shooting and your intended audience and work that angle.

I wasn't actually trying to limit myself as much as I wanted to determine if I was shooting out of my "look". It had been discussed that some faces were more appropriate for certain poses and types of look, so I was just checking to make sure I wasn't overstepping my boundaries.
