I have shot images of my wife on and off for the last 12 years and she has been great for me to work with. This weekend I have a new model that has decided to work on some new images with me. The big thing is shooting with my wife is fun and not so scary, now working with someone new is different to me. This girl has never modeled nude and is relatively new to modeling as well. How do I make her comfortable with me and the whole idea of what we are doing. I to am a little nerves as well being that this will be the first time shooting nudes other then my wife. Any advise is welcomed from both sides of the camera.

Thanks
Mitch

Okay I'm going to chime in on this one because its right up my alley, Having a wife that really understands the art or hobby is a great assest as everyone here on GG knows Im the overposter child for wife photography. Without DeAnn I dont think I would have gotten one Model in my studio. All the models I have worked with say its great that she is here for everyshoot and makes them much more comfortable on thier first shoot. some have said she is the reason they agreed to model for me in the first place. A safety factor for them if you will. I tell every model when I approach them about a photoshoot that we are a husband and wife photography business. I explain to them that my wife is the model on 90% of my work. They look at her work and that seems to put them at ease. JTSmith told a bunch of photographers that Im the luckiest smuck on the planet because I have DeAnn, to practice with,to promote with and to sometimes get my images right with! So what Im saying is the Wife factor can only be a benefit to you! go with it!!!

Don.

I am sure it has been said but your best asset is your WIFE. If you truly enjoy the photographic process and not just shooting naked pictures then your WIFE should assist you every step of the way.

At this time there is no better way to make your new model feel comfortable.

Ok, here is what I do. Get drunk! haha no not really. Yes, the first time is like anything, scary. For both of you it will be an experience. One question, does she know this will be your first too? If not then play it out like anything. Sometimes having the wife there can be a nice thing but in the same spot it can be a bad thing for both of you, especially nudes. Is she bringing an escort that she is comfortable with? Not a loved one like Mother or boyfriend. But I would say reach deep within yourself and go Metrosexual. Reach taht inner woman in you! Haha, I know it sounds funny but if they feel you have NO interest in them at all other than as a subject helps them fell more relaxed. Stay your distance! Let her know when your going to move close, or when your angling, If you need that moment to reflect on a pose while you stair at her, tell her what your doing. That way she doenst thing you are oogling her. Laugh, joke (clean haha) make it more casual like you yourself feel comfortable. Sit and talk if you have time, let her know what you have planned. Get some ideas from her as well. Let her feel she's on the same playing field as you. Light music in the back, to suit the mood of the shoot maybe. Be a little silly but not too silly. refer to things in their propper, Never offer to adjust. Let her ask you. If she isnt getting it, stay the distance and just show her. After a while you'll get more comfortable with it. Just remember....HAVE FUN! hehe good luck with it

I agree with the suggestions of having your wife participate as your 'backstage' person and assistant. You've been photographing her for 12 years so she should know about feeling comfortable in front of the camera and how you work so she should be able to field questions/concerns from the model. Of course, this only works if she *is* comfortable with you photographing other nude people. The intimacy of using your spouse allows more freedom than you might get from dealing with strangers.

As to the 'ogling' factor. I, luckily, had experience with drawing nude models in an Art School setting. You get into a space where the person becomes a shape that light produces shadows and lines on. You may see that nipple or pubis but it becomes an exercise in graphically reproducing on the paper rather than the object itself. There have been jokes about the artist's sexual desire showing itself when drawing/painting/photographing the model. But if you are in that space you are doing something wrong.

Objectify the model when you are 'in session'...humanize before and afterwards.

Ok, I'm fixin to do something here I thought I wouldn't. I'm coming out sort of speak. I do photograph nudes as many of us here do. But, my situation is, Gulp I live in a nudist resort. Yea, that's what I said.
I don't care if a lady is a naturist or whatever, the moment she steps in front of that camera it will be different. Your wife will be the best asset you can have at that moment. Your wife will be able to lead her into poses and suggest things much easier to a first time nude photo session than you will be able to.
I don't say this to make you more nervous, just more aware of what the model will feel. I do a number of ladies who are use to nudist lifestyle but when they walk in front of the camera it does change. Joke with them, have some sketches of what your thoughts are, get her thoughts on certain poses before the shoot. This helps to relieve some of the tension for both of you.
The human figure is a work of art, and we're all originals. Once you get into the session you probably won't even think about her being naked. You'll worry more about the lighting and what angles will be best.
Good Luck and have fun.

Wife factor aside (which is a big bonus for you).

Concentrate on making the image. Don't take a picture, make an image.

Trust me, you'll both be working so hard at making the image that neither of you will notice the nudity after a couple of minutes.
