I have been torn lately about studio space. I think about significantly cutting costs by turning my two car garage into a studio. But then get that whole working outa your home weird feel about it. As it is now I am just starting out of not doing any weddings or senior style pictures and want to persue commercial more directly. Doing this dips well into my costs, but still dont want to scare models off with the "here is my garage, come work with me feel." What are models feelings on this? Have you ever encountered this type of setting? Going to some house and shooting in some converted garage. What are your thoughts? Your input would be greatly appreciated in trying to see what responses would be.

but look up there at the top of the screen, see it, "Garage Glamour"

I think a lot of Photographers use their Garage as a studio, I do. I may or may not mention it to the Models, often I just say "I have a home studio", but out of 50 or so Models, none have walked out....

I have worked with many photographers that either work out of their home, or their garage. I don't have a problem with it, I've had some amazing photoshoots from in-home/garage studios. I like to know before hand, just so I know what to expect.

I work with Charlie of CharliesImages out of his home, and it's never been a problem.

I have worked with many photographers that have a home studio as well.

More important then the location of your studio, offer a list of references and allow the model to bring an escort to the shoot.

I don't know if you know who Mr. Photo Studios is but I've worked with him many of times. He uses a garage that has been converted into a studio. Now I will say, I was a little leary about going to someones house to do a photo shoot but when I checked out his work and brought someone with me, nothing mattered to me anymore. Actually , it's kind of cool. He uses one of the spare rooms in his house, so the girls can hang up their clothes and get changed and plenty of miirors so we can check our selves out. He actually has more things to work with then alot of the photographers that I have seen. I don't know if it is because he gets to cut cost by doing it in his house or not but,... hey it works for him! You can also use your backyard if you wanted too. Here's a pic going into the studio of Mikes.
I hope this helps and go check out his site if you get a chance.

I'm a woman photographer so that makes me a little less threating, but I work out of my home. I converted my garage to a studio. I tell prospective models up front and always encourage them to bring an escort. (not a boyfriend/hubby) I've totally remodeled and you can't hardly tell it was a garage now. There are two doors into the studio and both lock from the studio side. That way they know no-one else can come in. When contacting a model I send them my website so they can see that I am legitimate.

you stole the words right out of my mouth Kelly!!

It's not location, yet your reputation and referance list. Even if going to an actuall studio, these would be the deciding factor on whether or not to agree to the shoot!

Happy Holidays!

I actually live at Mr. Photo Studios house right now. Like Jessica said, his garage has been converted from Garage to Studio and it's awesome!

He's got everything you need and you'd be impressed it's all in that garage!

Bathtub, Bedroom style, bathroom style, backdrops, living room look, walls, everything!!!

It's actually the best place I've shot at before b/c he's got EVERYTHING there!

Since I now live in his extra room that he had models changing in, he's about to make a changing room in his garage

It's a great idea!

Cinday, I find it interesting that you encourage escorts, but don't allow spouses or boyfriends.

I am curious how you present your no spouse/boyfriend rule to your prospective models.
