As to if a lifetime membership to GG would be considered a professional fee and therefore a write off on ones taxes? Curious minds want to know.

Yes. You can include it as a business expense for advertising or promoting your business but please check and run it by your accountant.

take the time to press the little blue buttons. Too often both the customer AND the photographer approach the photography business as little more than glorified snapshots. EVERYONE knows how much a roll of film amd processing costs but few add in the other things that make a business fly. A great photographer is not selling pictures so much as he is selling his talent and service. If the images represent great service the the cost is value in kind. After all to paraphrase Picasso: I charge you $50 for the paints and canvas and $500 for the Picasso to paint the picture."

Thank you,
I would always check first, but having been in other fields, some are and some are not considered professional type organizations.

First let me say I have a degree in accounting and yes you can deduct your membership fee if you do have a legit photography business.

I would classify the fee under dues/subscriptions or education expenses.

Thank you for your response.
I asked this because of the online nature of GG.

This is a great eye-opener, but remember these numbers are for a journalist photographer who may not need a studio or staff. Someone in a portrait studio, or a commercial advertising situation would have different numbers to input, but it does act as a reality check-list for those who think their only expense is their camera & flash & computer. Even if you're working from home (like I do) some of that stuff will still affect you, although you can also deduct much of it as well.

You might also check these sites for more pro info. I've posted them before but it never hurts to repeat. Drill down on some of the links on these sites, especially APA & EP, they have resources and calculators for almost anything you need.
