The newstand stuff... with some TV and book stuff thrown in...

Well, Breanne Ashley didn't get the Miss FHM title. The new FHM is on the stands, and the girl from New Jersey got it. I never did like beauty contests... Anyway the January issue has a freebie calendar. Not up to the Italian MAX standards, but then it's not as expensive. Besides I haven't seen a copy of MAX in a long time.

The latest issue of Digital Photographer has some nice stuff including a tutorial on doing the Sin City look with images. Also reviews on the Canon 5D and EOS 1D Mark II N ad infinitum. (Whatever happened to short camera names like F5?) That plus an article on shooting in the dark, and "seeing light" make this a worthwhile browse even if you pass on paying $13 for it and the accompanying CD of tutorials.

Speaking of Sin City, I see there is a special edition DVD coming out that adds 20 minutes to the film, has a copy of a Sin City comic book, and some additional features on the DVD. I must admit even I bought the original version DVD after all the chatter on the forums.

The new Zink has a few high spots, but their drift toward more lifestyle and entainment articles seems to have dissipated their fashion coverage and with it the photography. I think I've bought my last copy, but to each his own...

I've seen ads for a book called Digital Glamour Photography or something similar by Duncan Evans. You might keep an eye out for it. I haven't seen it in the bookstores yet. I think Duncan Evans is the co-author on some of those glamour photography books that are near standards these days.

The Victoria's Secret fashion show is reportedly televised Dec 6th on CBS. 10 PM if memory serves me. Tyra Banks' Top Model show is winding down. I think next Wednesday is the final show with the winner being selected. Then they start over again. I'm waiting for the start of the next Runway show season with Heidi Klum. Should be starting about Dec. 7 or so. Lot's of ads in Elle Magazine for it. Hopefully, it will be as entertaining as the first season...

In browsing the calendar kiosks at the mall, I noticed a definite reduction in the number of swimsuit/glamour/pinup calendars being shown. There are still lots of girly calendars being printed, it just seems the kiosks aren't carrying them. Must be a reaction to slow sales, or maybe everybody has caught on to the fact that they significantly drop the prices after Christmas and killed the high margins. Also the quantity of each calendar they did have was rather small. On the other hand, dog calendars are there aplenty. Wonder what that indicates?

The disclaimer -- I get nothing from nobody for mentioning anything. My opinions are strictly mine. If you don't like them, vote Republican and drive me crazy...

As mentioned above, this is the last of the newstand stuff. Was an interesting exercise, but it doesn't seem to be being read. Time to put it behind...

After writing the above post, I got curious why I hadn't seen a copy of Italian MAX for a while. A search on Google turned up this link which seems like a French version, although I won't swear they are the same magazine.

Anyway, they also publish a sexy calendar! And as a special treat here's a link to a two minute video of a behind the scenes look at their calendar shoot. I'm always fascinated by these behind the scenes looks... Caution nudity, as if that's going to stop you...

Click on the Voir la video on the lower right side of the page and wait for the video to load. Those with dial up may have a bit of a wait. It plays pretty quick on my DSL...

Enjoy! I still don't know if Italian MAX is still around though...

Al

By the way - nice summary!

I was in a large Border books the other day. I saw a large display of calendars on the main floor. I looked around to see what they had - and realized there were NO suimsuit, glamour, etc. Then I went upstairs and saw another rack of calndars between the bargain books and music area. Here were all the sci-fi and glamour calendars! They were putting the "family" calendars in the main floor and the "adult" calendars in the back!

The best imagery is often too "rich" "sexy" for America to digest.
We need our "pablum"

I really might need to schedule a trip to Europe just to get refreshed.

However if you jump around on the net you can find quite the variety of artists and art. Its takes time and I love to find a good complilation of edgey outofthebox material in magazine form on the newrack.

Best I have here in Atlanta is Joe Muggs. Borders and Barnes n Noble have given in to political correctness quite a bit.

Maybe I can just go back to Los Angeles.

Well, I found a website for what appears to be Italian MAX magazine.

It's at MAX magazine

MAX magazine has a well deserved reputation for publishing some of the sexiest calendars around. Note I said sexiest, not necessarily the nudest, most pornographic, or whatever... just sexy. I've seen them in past years, and they are sexy!

So here's the problem, they now require registration to gain access to their site. Okay, I can live with that... but the registration form is in Italian, and doesn't seem to make allowances for folks outside of Italy. I tried several times and couldn't get it to accept a registration.

To view the latest MAX calendar, and their gallerys of images, ya gotta be registered.

So the challenge... figure out what it takes to get an acceptable registration. I used the Google translation thingy and it wasn't much help in filling in some of the info. The translation was a little too literal, and didn't make sense.

Any Italians out there want to clue us in on how to get registered from the USA?

Ciao!

The major bookstores have always minimized their girly calendar display. However, Barnes and Noble has in past years used temporary kiosks in the adjoining malls to peddle a much broader range of calendars, including lots of swimsuit/glamour/pinup types. It's these kiosks I was talking about.

I was in a Borders store today, and they had the Playboy lingerie, Maxim, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit calendars... but no others.

In past years, I seem to remember them carrying perhaps a dozen different "adult" calendars, with titles such as Beach Buns, etc. Even some classic Elvgren and Petty artwork calendars. Not so this year, or at least they don't have them on display...

Maybe they are bowing to the political agenda of the... well, you know.

well, nice review of the latest issue of Digital Photographer. you motivated me to go over to Barnes & Noble and sit down in the zine section and peruse the issue. i was hoping to see something more photographic with the sin city lighting thing rather than a mini PS tutorial on how to make images look like they were drawn for a graphic novel. but oh well.

there was an interesting lighting setup in there i might try... it called for hanging a large silk (which i have) with a large octagon softbox (which i also have) behind it and with both behind the camera (for very, very soft, overall fill) and then a beauty dish (which, yet again, i also have) in front of camera and to the side as a key, and then two small softboxes, either side, behind the subject (yep, got those too), flagged to prevent spill but providing edge light from both sides. looks pretty cool.
