I was playing around while at the Virgin Islands workshop last week. I used my Hensel Integra Pro monolight with a 48-inch Larson Soff Strip. The soft box had a 40-degree Lighttools honeycomb grid, which I normally use for my strip boxes. Inside the box I added a Rosco #02 Bastard Amber, but folded over twice to see the color effect. My white-balance was lowered from the normal 6000K that I use to 5300K.

I also put a red and magenta gel into the water from the sides using two Hensel Premium Porty powerpaks with the EHT1200 heads and a 7-inch reflector w/20-degree grids.

While the images look great on the camera and in print, not sure how they look on screen and what your thougths about this color mired shift? Just curious, but here are two shots I played with, thanks, rg sends!

I like the effect on the water, but the "double bastard" appears to be overcooked on the model for my taste...

From a technical stand point the first one looks over processed but the whirlpool shot has a good feeling to it. I can see tiki torches as the light source, or something like that, that would give it the warm feeling. So for me the whirlpool shot works and I like it but the other one does not work for my taste.

One thing about the Hensel Porty's, and Hensel in general, they are very nice to work with and can pull off this technical challenge with ease.

Did you notice a difference between one and two Bastard gel? I was under the impression that it wouldn't change the color but would only drop the intensity, similar to an ND filter affect. If so couldn't you get the same affect by dropping the power of the main?

My experience has been that because of it's transparency, increased layers = increased color saturation. Much like going over a line of text with a highlighter once vs. twice.

I agree w/JT. #1 looks over processed.

#2 is much nicer. I don't know what to think of the color of the water being different camera right of her left leg. Looks a little odd to me.

no harm meant but, I can do that first effect by over saturating a shoot in PS..

Then second shot is way cool...

I love those bastards...

Rolando, have you ever tried firing a basterd gel into one of your california sun bounces? This was done with the bastard gel light off to the side (on high power approx. 8.3) and my beauty dish (on the lowest power setting, approx. 5.0) in front of the model:

JT,

Thanks. The shot actually looks better in print and I snuck it in my new book at the last second. I have to agree, Hensel rocks all the way, thanks again, rg sends!
