If you're stuck keeping the model that close to the backdrop, then 1.) move your lights in as close as you can manage, and 2.) get as much light as humanly possible on the model.
See, the short and sweet answer always has a long and sour string of addendums, qualifiers, and explanations to go with it...
Duane, about 2' away from the background... admittedly, a black felt background...

Steven,

Thanks man..that is something I have been struggling with is lighting the model but not the background...I am not quite adept enough to do that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Grids and honeycombs and other such things. This is a senior photo, but it's an example. I used louvers on the main (softbox), honeycomb on the rim light, and the BG light had barn doors.:

I am comming to find out as I learn more and more that my "personal" tastes lean more towards images like this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe that's cuz, IMO as well, images like these are SO much more appealing and interesting. We live in a world of light and shadow, not just light. Artistically, as you probably know, it's called chiaroscuro: An Italian word that means "light and shade." Chiaroscuro adds depth and so much more to the image. Nice work!

Very nice. I love the color contrast between her undergarments and the background. The lighting also provides a very nice effect.

I agree on the background. I like your results but the more flatly lit background is stealing attention from the model.

There are two ways to achieve what you're trying to do on the background and both are really one and the same. You either need a very large area to shoot in where you can light the background separately with light spilling onto it from your mains or you need a combination of modifiers to stop the light from spilling onto the backgound. These can include snoots, barndoors, grids, flags and so on and then every thing needs to be metered.

Nice shots... the first one is my fav. I like the little bit of light hitting the eye, and the second one is a little to harsh and makes her look heavier. Nice stuff...
