Hey All,

I have been contracted to shoot a cover plus some inside images for Valley Car Magazine in Texas. Dist is 40k. Thus far we have agreed to a day rate, air fair, models airfare a day rate for the model that gets choosen for the cover (I will be submitting models to him) and a per image rights usage. My ? is, how much is a cover typically worth. In our talkes, they will need about 10 images from the shoot. For those of you that have exp with this sort of thing....how much should I charge for the cover image and then how much each additional image inside. Or, should I charge an "all inclusive" rate? Any thoughts would help.

Thanks,
Michael

ps...this mag is only being dist in S Texas at the moment.

Rates vary by magazine. Some magazine don't pay anything....just tears.

Hi Micheal

Check out ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography. I cannot find my older ASMP books but I had one that listed information on how to price photographic rights. The forms are great too. I see that you have already noted the size and scope of distribution (40k and in S Texas). Another book that helped me was the ASMP's Stock Photography Handbook. It can give you an idea of the fee relationships for different sizes of publications. When I shot sports in the '80s we were paid $800 per day, $400 per travel day, expenses, and on top of that if space rate exceded day rates we were paid the difference. This was for one time rights with the top mags. Smaller mags like California Golf or Volleyball Monthy paid less.

Hi Candace,

Thanks for the email. I am aware that some only provide tears. I did state in my email that we have agreed to a per image right usage.

Thanks for the email,
Michael

It wasn't trying to insult your intelligence. I figured that when you said "we have agreed to a per image right usage",I thought you were just mentioning your agreement with the magazine thus far. Since you didn't state you knew that some magazines only did tears, I wanted to give you that information right now, while I tried to look up rates for you in my Photographer's market book so you have something more concrete.

I found a couple of Texas magazines and a few of them pay from $25 (low end) to $170 for per color images, and $200 (low end) to $500 for covers, with one time rights. This is from the Photographer's Market book from 2003. I hope that helps.

Best wishes to you and your project!

Try this. It might help you get a ballpark. Ultimately though, it's what the client is willing to pay that determines how much your cover is worth. If you've come up with something that' suitable to you both then I wouldn't mess with it.
