Any and all input would be appreciated...good ideas for lighting or a link or two to see how you PRO's do it...its a small salon but the owner would like a good look and is willing to pay some cash for light rentals... i would prefer monolights or something non-strobe if possible, or maybe a ringlite to give it that glam look...i dont know...the options are limit-less and i need suggestions... i know you kids can help!
thanks

Be sure to use a hair light.
You might want to try a softbox high and on axis with the camera for some nice butterfly light. Add a light directly behind the model to light up the hair, and a reflector underneath the soft box. Classic glamour with plenty of hair detail if you don't blow out it with the rim light.

This has been a job that has worked out well for me. If you're shooting for one of the hair quarterlies, take a look at their images and try to design your shots accordingly. We just finished a shoot for "Passion", and we just shot it against gray paper. It matches the look of a lot of their shots.

Be sure to get both sides of the head, and shots of the back if there's anything going on there.

I think that strobes are the way to go. Just a classic key/fill/background/hair light setup will do. Keep the lighting relatively flat but not without shadows. If you know they're going to want to go black and white with the shots, you might get away with a little more contrast.

If you're shooting a bunch of models, organization is the key. Make up a sheet to record the names of the model, stylist, colorist, MUA, and anything else you can think of, including the file names! Allow more time than you think you need for switching between subjects.

If the salon will display your prints, make sure that your contact information is tastefully yet clearly provided.

I recently shot for a party at a local salon, about 20 of their best customers, and we printed images of them for the salon to hang on their walls. A couple of weeks later, a new cosmetology school came through on a field trip, saw my images, and hired me to come in every Friday to shoot portfolios for their students! So, I think this is a great way to get your name out there.
