Ok this coming wednesday Oct 2 my wife will deliver our 4th daughter and I am going to photograph not video the delivery. I would like to know if anyone has any information as to the lighting or any techniques for shooting in a delivery room. I have a Canon 300D with the kit lens and also a 50mm 1.8

Now the 50mm x1.6 equals to about 80mm so I would have to stand a distance away from the action. the kit lens is as you know a 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 so I was figuring that the light in the room will be enough to maybe use the kit lens so that I can get a little closer to the subject. Buying the 50mm 1.4 wouldn't help me in this situation because I would still be at the same 80mm focal length but giving me a little more speed which again there just may be enough light in the room anyway.

Any suggestions would be helpful..

The dumbest question is the one that's never asked!!!

Just an edumacated guess here, but I think the 50mm could be all you need.

I'm not a doctor (nor have I gone through fatherhood yet), but I would take a guess that the doctors wouldn't be too happy with you popping off a flash in their faces while they're trying to deliver your child. That, and it may stun the child. On that note, you should have enough light to take some acceptable photos without the flash anyway. From photos I've seen taken in a delivery room, they're going to have some fairly large lights on so the doctor can see everything clearly.

Although you wouldn't be able to get extremely close to the subject, the 50mm will let you shoot with available light if you set the ISO to 1600. If you're feeling lucky, install the hacked firmware on the 300D and if I remember correctly, you can get ISO3200.

Another alternative is to rent a lens like the 70-200 F2.8L IS. You could make due with the less expensive 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS lens, but it might not be fast enough for available light work.

Can't offer any useful advice, other than to mention that our hospital's delivery room was - while not a studio - well-lit. I would guess that the extra stop won't be critical - but it's a guess.

Best wishes to you and your wife for an easy birth, and congratulations.
