In looking at all the photos submitted to the Model's photo contest for the last several months, I've learned a lot. One thing is that lots of people don't know how to pick the best photo to submit. Are there any rules in picking a good potential photo.

1. Avoid cliche shots
2. Avoid blurry shots
3. Avoid wierd avant garde shots
4. Avoid a shot that looks like a snapshot
5. Avoid shots that are more about the scene than the model
6. Avoid shots that are poorly composed
7. Avoid shots that are poorly exposed.

How do you know if your shot violates one of the rules above. Well examine the shot you want to use in comparison with the top 3 shots for each month's past contest. If you don't think your shot is at good as one of those, then maybe you haven't picked the best shot.

I often look at the portfolios of models who have submitted a shot to the contest and find a much better shot there than the one they chose. So give the choice of which photo to use some considered attention before choosing it.

And now for everyone: What other rules would you think would be important to add to my list of "Avoids". I was going to put up a list of "Do look for ..." buy I got tired of thinking at this late hour.

Cheers,
rfs

I noticed a number of shots over the last couple of months that appeared to be done by web cams...I find that interesting. Also, the obvious cell phone camera in the mirror, although there was a shot done that was obviously done this way that I actually thought was kinda neat.

Those are the ones that are a bit odd to me personally. Just my opinion there...

great topic!

here's my advice to models:

1. don't pick the shot yourself.
2. don't let your photographer pick the shot.
3. don't let your significant other, or your mother or father, or someone very close to you pick the shot.

why?

obviously, your photographer, and your significant others, and you, are the most biased in terms of how they see you or how they see the image.

so what should you do?

1. if you have an agent or manager they might be helpful. they're the people marketing you so they ought to know something about what shots present you the best.

2. if you have to choose yourself, how about a little poll? pick three of your best shots--at least the best according to yu--and post them with the question "which one does everyone think i should submit for the contest?"

3. if all else fails, try one of those Magic 8-Balls. i've found them to sometimes be quite good at this kind of stuff.

pick a glamour shot. Without opening the whole debate over what is glamour I think it is safe to say "sex and revealing" sums it up for this board. Remember this is in addition to the other suggestions. Unless the model is an active participant with a known body of work (no pun intended) the image we see will be the only thing we have to go on so you might have a great face but for glamour unless the image comes from Hurrell a portrait probably won't do it.

Great advise
