Looking towards the future, how does a photographer get published? Are there resources out there that give good, solid advice on learning the ropes and starting out? Also, are there similar resources for models?

I know it is a broad topic, and it is probably different depending on the genre (glamour, catalog, etc), but I'm just looking for general advice.

I plan on hitting a workshop or two next year, are there any that have a focus towards the business side as well as shooting?

Thanks!
Glenn K.

1. decide where you want to be published. Study that inside out.

2. take really nice pictures that look exactly like the type of stuff they are currently buying. Preferably a little better than what they are currently buying.

3. send them to them. ask for work.

simple write-up of career path to being published. You can make it more complicated, but thats the reality of how it really works.

First Question I Always Ask...Why do you want to get published?

[/ QUOTE ]

WHY?? What does it matter what anyones motive is to being published?? I too would like to have my work published...and for various reasons.

I would hope getting my work published will result in immediate paid work OR lead to paid work down the road. (note to self: photography equipment ain't cheap)

It helps build the resume' and adds credibility

It's one of my goals since I don't earn my living as a photographer

It's self satisfaction...an EDITOR views the work as worthy material for their editorial or catalogue

So, I throw the question back at you...WHY does it matter WHY anyone wants to get published...

If you have suggestions that may assist someone getting published, then please share. The question you pose seems very condescending to me...

There are really only 3 replies to his post in my opinion:

1. I don't know
2. Here are some suggestions (much like Glen's reply)
3. I know, but I am not going to offer any assistance or suggestions

Gelnn's reply is pretty much on target. Focus Workshops hosts a Focus on Getting Published workshop. There's always tons of great info from guys actually getting published.

A LITTLE over simplified? So that is how to get published everywhere?

The advice is solid in points one and two, but just sending them pictures is not all it takes most of the time. What size, what format, who to send to, who is the REAL best person to contact, etc.

If I want to be published in Vogue I need to send em some pictures? WOW! Vogue gets their photographers like that? and W?

The advice in points one and two are really solid. Step three is where the real learning begins and it is why so many good photographers never make it to the next level. It is not so simple with a lot of publications and print clients

I think Rick Hughes touches on my point.

If you are just running around with no mission or no focus, it's
hard to hit the target.
I like to point people towards the direction they are heading,
not just general information that does not specifically address
what the individual wants.

If you are sensitive--- yes, it would appear that way.

These are good reasons, but they are your reasons... That's why I'm
asking about him. I want to get the know the person a little. See how he thinks.

I ask questions to gain a little insight in order to help.

Hope this answers your questions.

will write more later....

are you talking about getting published in a book? like a coffee table book or a book on photography or one of photographers' work? or are you speaking about getting your work into publications like magazines and such? cuz that's two very different things.

personally, when i hear someone say "published" i'm thinking books even tho, technically, the word works for either books or periodicals.
