Or maybe call it a dedication a la Marilyn Monroe or Marlene Dietrich (leaning towards Marilyn of course).. We were going for a classic glamour look.

Opinions, critiques? Did we pull it off? Suggestions for improvement?

Don,

I don't believe that they did use a hairlight in the way that we did. It looks like in those days, they just used a spot or narrow grid above the model to highlight the hair. Of course we had to put our own spin on it by adding the halo'd hairlight from behind.

As for the "harsh lighting" bit, I've posted this image on a few sites and see that comment on about 50% of the replies, which is kind of wierd. Maybe people forgot what 40's glamour looks like.

Take a look at some of George Hurrell's images, paying attention to the Bogie and Marlene Dietrich portraits. I think there's a Marilyn Monroe image out there that's very similar. This is how they were lit in those days, and that's the style we were paying homage to with this one.

Here's a link to some of Hurrell's photos, just to remind people what glamour looked like in those days:

Keep shooting, brother.

I like your effort, although the color throws me, so to speak. It's effective, but doesn't fit the noir images in my mind.

This is exactly the problem. People will compare the image to their recollection of the cited works, not necessarily the true works. Even in a community dominated by photography buffs, many will not accurately recall Hurrell's work. [And some who do, have actually only see reproductions, which may or may not be good reproductions.] It's a human thing.

Nice work. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I thought about that as I wound up my workflow on this one. I was going do some B&W with slight toning but I liked the color version too much. Perhaps when I have more time, I'll try it in B&W and post it again.
