hey hey all,

I cannot believe that it is already the middle of October - Dang, where is the time going?

Anyway, just thought I post another comparison of photos.

The first one is shot on velvia 50 and crossed processed
The second one is shot on B&W
The third one is digital

Photoshop is barely used on any of them

Thanks in advance for ur comments

Lon

Well if I have to choose 1, I'll choose 2. I was going to go with 4, but you haven't uploaded it yet .

cheers,
rfs

I presume you are looking for an "edgy" look, given the lighting and pose, so given that assumption I think #1 achieves the edgy look in a spectacular way.

not sure comparing the cross-processed film with the digital is fair to either as you could make the digital look like the cross-processed film image with post effects.

the monochrome... which im usually partial too... doesn't work as well as the color images for this stuff, imo.

Not to be argumentative, but I thought it was part of the artist's responsibility to decide which image best expressed his/her intention...

Now, if you're simply asking which do I like best - I'd probably go with the first. As JimmyD commented, this b/w isn't as strong as the color images - although I suspect if you'd back off a bit on the contrast, allowing a bit more detail to show - it'd be better, and I'd probably then prefer the b/w.

IMO, this scene somehow demands a somewhat surreal or dreamlike rendering. Your cross-processed image does this quite effectively, as does frequently a b/w image. Here, (still my opinion) the b/w image contains too little information to render the image as effectively as either color image. The straight digital image fails to provide sufficient "surreal" character to the image, in spite of the gelled lighting.

OK, now which do you prefer and why, Mr. Artist, sir?

Nice stuff, Lon. Thanks for sharing.

hey hey and thanks for all the response

From this set I deffo know which one I like best, but I asked "which one?" to get opinions of other people. I always find it interesting as to which images other's like and the reasons why.

I also post the 3 different versions becasue I again find it interesting (as do others) in the difference that format makes. Even though its the same set up, same lighting, same everything (just shot in a different format) the diference in the photos and the feel of the photos are all so very different - I just find it fascinating

Yes, the effects of #1 and #2 can both be obtained from the digital pic #3 by using Photoshop. But I'm old fashioned and prefer to do it the old fashioned way - by NOT using Photoshop

#3 (for me) is an ok pic... but it's too clean and too sharp and really doesn't convey much of anything (to me)...

#2 is deffo very high contrast - maybe a little too high for some (maybe even for me)... but I'm really into high contrast images... This is the original scan of the proof print. Photoshop was only used for despeckle. The high contrast is unretouched and is exactly how it is in the negative.

#1 is my fav

Thanks for ur comments

Lon
