Lately I've been playing around with alternative photographic processes. Specifically, I've been exposing color slides and processing them in color negative chemistry, a.k.a. cross-processing. You get a color negative without the orange mask that manufacturers build into their negative emulsions, so the colors come out real funky. You scan (or print) to get the skin tones as close to normal as possible and let the other colors fall where they may. The results are rather interesting. Shadows and highlights do different things, saturation and contrast go up, and sometimes you get weird reversal effects similar to solarization.

Anyway, here are a few of the more psychedelic results I've obtained. These are from J.T's Lancaster SuperShoot. Model is Caroline here on GG. Thoughts, comments, observations all welcome.

Great pics. you might try over exposing you e-6 film by 2 fstops and using a softfocus filter. and use brighter colors. your pics will absolutey pop.
(the filter makes the colors bleed a little more.

I've settled on exposing right at the rated speed if there's any really light color in the image. Otherwise the highlights block up too much. 2 stops is the way to go if you can keep your luminance in the scene to three stops or less.

Regarding the colors, I'm still playing around with them. For these I wanted to keep her skin tone near normal. A straighter interpretation shows really saturated colors in the bra, bandana, and shorts, but her skin goes really red. It looks posterized or silk-screened. The bra pops more in the original print as well because it's a shade that's outside the color gamut for the red phosphors used in monitors.

I'll have to try the diffusion filter and see what effect it has. Thanks for the tip.

shoot slide film like you would normally, then develop it with a teaspoon of baking soda in the chemistry. It gives everything a greenish brown type of color. A leprochauns dream photo, if you will. Gotta love college instructors that are graphic artists.

WOW! No one has ever done this to my images before. Something very different I must say.
