This is my first time shooting studio photography and with my new Alien Bees lights. Peggy had never modeled before so this was a learning experience for both of us. Comments/suggestions welcome.

I would not say they are neither. I would say glamour. Now I am new at this so they may not be very good but certainly not pornogrpahy. Your thoughts?

To me they are no where close to being pornography. Not even sure why anyone would even wonder if they are.

For a first time studio shot the lighting look pretty good to me.

From a lighting standpoint they are okay, but a bit flat. You can probably punch them up a bit with a little more attention to lighting ratios. This is very easy with the AB systems.

The way the shots are cropped leaves something to be desired. #2 is the best, but all could be improved my better attention to what you want the photo to focus on. For example in #1, you crop out part of the arm on the left. That smacks more of just not getting the whole frame into your viewfinder when shooting the shot.

#3 is a bit dark and suffers mostly because of the flat lighting ratio. Lowkey is a bit more difficult to master than medium to high key. One thing I find that helps, is to get a good book on basic lighting and then work through the examples setups in the book and then you'll be able to see the difference better. A fairly good book in that regard is "Master Lighting Guide" by Christopher Grey.

Cheers,
rfs

Thank you for the advice. I did have a hell of a time getting my lights right. My main light was either too hot on her face or I was getting tons of spill from my backlights. I didnt have any flags or foam board to block the backlights (umbrellas) from spilling into the shots. I was trying for the blown out white background on white seamless on #1 and #2 but had to turn the lights down to stop the spill on the sides of the model. I will figure that one out eventually.

I am still trying to figure out the lighting ratios and where to place the lights. I am sure that all comes in time. I ordered the book you mentioned on Friday so it should be here early this week.

Once again, thanks for the critique. That was exactly what I was looking for.

Overcoming the spill is always a problem area in highkey where you want to blow out the background. Here is one way I handle it:

The lights are aimed from either side at the background and then a large reflector (book end) is placed between that light and the model.

Well..Davinci... i`ve just seen the fist picture and then scrolled up because i don`t think that pictures with a neked person and posing in a provocative way... might be considered porn.
Good luck with your lightning and i advice to take women who are dressed and you to practice your directing skills for they to model as you want to.

Cheers,
