got to shoot a model with my new lighting. Tabitha is a friend that is involved with my co-owned import web site. She was able to make some time in light of the car show we are co-sponsering this weekend in Savannah. Ive only had time to edit a couple so far but will be posting more. These two images were shot utilizing different lighting set ups. Comments and critiqes welcome.

if that's the first time you've worked with studio strobes, you did a fine job!

Thanks Jimmy!!..Its the third time...but the first time I have actually set the strobes up. I used your post as a ref for the second shot. It really helped out ALOT so thanks...just not sure bout my metering is all. Its wwwaaayy diff then shooting hot lights. The first was beauty dish as main, silver bounce for fill, 30x60 sb camera left and behind and barn doors on cam right/behind for hair light. I must say....I will prolly not shoot very often with hot lights (maybe fresnel) anymore.

Thanks again man!

well, first time or third time, you done good. glad i could be of help.

btw, when i said in my reply to you (in the tech forum) that i rarely use a fill light, i was specifically refering to a three-light setup which i most often use. if i'm outside, and i can't get anything to bounce in, then i'll use a a light to fill. i'm just not big on putting light sources on both the right and left sides of a model from the front... things tend to flatten out too much for my tastes. but, of course, if the client wantsit that way, i go with what they want. and, sometimes in high-key shots i'll use a fill light, but it's going to be very subtle, diffused, and usually feathered away from the model quite a bit.

Hey Mike they look real good. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe cut the hair light down a notch. Other wise it looks good. What's the background ?

Thanks Jimmy,

I pretty much followed your set up from the brunette model on the green background you posted. I was wondering about the "flattness" of some of my images lately. All of a sudden it made sense. Real world has lights and darks. I was always "afraid" of shadows because of how I was instructed by someone in the past...i know that to be false. personally..i dig the effect of the main and fill with foam core. So thank you for that. Now if I can get my mettering down a little better...i can start learning to "do what I want" to "get the look" that i want. With these images...i wanted a strong rim light. They didnt turn out exact...but im way pleased.

that's it in a nutshell. we don't live in a world void of shadow. conrasting light and shadow is what gives both a sense of reality as well as some 'drama' to your images. of course, the key is in controlling both the light and the shadows and making them play effectively and artistically with each other. the real world doesn't have those sexy rim lights either but, what the heck, using them in your photo setups is like a writer taking dramatic license.
